Nahum

Chapter 1

Phonetic (Hebrew): mashsּa֖ niֽyneve֑h se֧per chaz֛on nach֖um ha'eleqoshshiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

מַשָּׂ֖א נִֽינְוֵ֑ה סֵ֧פֶר חֲז֛וֹן נַח֖וּם הָאֶלְקֹשִֽׁי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣l qanּ֤o venoqem֙ yehva֔h noqe֥m yehva֖h uba֣'al chema֑h noqe֤m yehvah֙ letzara֔yv venote֥r h֖u le'oyebaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)God is jealous, and the LORD revengs; the LORD revengs, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reservs wrath for His enemies.

אֵ֣ל קַנּ֤וֹא וְנֹקֵם֙ יְהוָ֔ה נֹקֵ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה וּבַ֣עַל חֵמָ֑ה נֹקֵ֤ם יְהוָה֙ לְצָרָ֔יו וְנוֹטֵ֥ר ה֖וּא לְאֹיְבָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yehova֗h 'e֤reke 'apּa֨yim֙ vgdvl ugedal-kּo֔cha venaqּe֖h lo֣ yenaqּe֑h yehva֗h bּesupa֤h ubishse'arah֙ dּarekּ֔o ve'ana֖n 'aba֥q ragelaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet.

יְהֹוָ֗ה אֶ֤רֶךְ אַפַּ֨יִם֙ וגדול וּגְדָל־כֹּ֔חַ וְנַקֵּ֖ה לֹ֣א יְנַקֶּ֑ה יְהוָ֗ה בְּסוּפָ֤ה וּבִשְׂעָרָה֙ דַּרְכּ֔וֹ וְעָנָ֖ן אֲבַ֥ק רַגְלָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּo'e֤r bּayּam֙ vaֽyּabּeshshe֔hu vekal-hanּehar֖ot heֽcheri֑yb 'umela֤l bּashshan֙ vekareme֔l upe֥rach leban֖on 'umelaֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He rebuks the sea, and makes it dry, and dris up all the rivers: Bashan languishes, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languishes.

גּוֹעֵ֤ר בַּיָּם֙ וַֽיַּבְּשֵׁ֔הוּ וְכָל־הַנְּהָר֖וֹת הֶֽחֱרִ֑יב אֻמְלַ֤ל בָּשָׁן֙ וְכַרְמֶ֔ל וּפֶ֥רַח לְבָנ֖וֹן אֻמְלָֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hariym֙ ra'ashsh֣u mimּe֔nּu vehagּeba'֖ot hitemoga֑gu vatּishsּa֤ ha'a֨retz֙ mipּana֔yv vetebe֖l vekal-yo֥shshebey baֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The mountains quake at Him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at His presence, yes, the world, and all that dwell therein.

הָרִים֙ רָעֲשׁ֣וּ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ וְהַגְּבָע֖וֹת הִתְמֹגָ֑גוּ וַתִּשָּׂ֤א הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ מִפָּנָ֔יו וְתֵבֵ֖ל וְכָל־יֹ֥שְׁבֵי בָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lipene֤y za'emo֙ mi֣y yaֽ'am֔od umi֥y yaq֖um bּachar֣on 'apּ֑o chamato֙ nitּeka֣h ka'e֔shsh vehatzּuri֖ym nitּetz֥u mimּeֽnּu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Who can stand before His indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by Him.

לִפְנֵ֤י זַעְמוֹ֙ מִ֣י יַֽעֲמ֔וֹד וּמִ֥י יָק֖וּם בַּחֲר֣וֹן אַפּ֑וֹ חֲמָתוֹ֙ נִתְּכָ֣ה כָאֵ֔שׁ וְהַצֻּרִ֖ים נִתְּצ֥וּ מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): t֣ob yehva֔h lema'֖oz bּey֣om tzara֑h veyode֖'a cho֥sey bֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)[1] The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and He knows them that trust in Him.

ט֣וֹב יְהוָ֔ה לְמָע֖וֹז בְּי֣וֹם צָרָ֑ה וְיֹדֵ֖עַ חֹ֥סֵי בֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubeshshe֣tep 'obe֔r kּala֖h ya'ashse֣h meqoma֑hּ ve'oyeba֖yv yeradּep-choֽshsheke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But with an overrunning flood He will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue His enemies.

וּבְשֶׁ֣טֶף עֹבֵ֔ר כָּלָ֖ה יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה מְקוֹמָ֑הּ וְאֹיְבָ֖יו יְרַדֶּף־חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mah-tּechashshּebun֙ 'el-yehva֔h kּala֖h h֣u 'oshse֑h loֽ'-taq֥um pּa'ama֖yim tzaraֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)What do you imagine against the LORD? He will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.

מַה־תְּחַשְּׁבוּן֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה כָּלָ֖ה ה֣וּא עֹשֶׂ֑ה לֹֽא־תָק֥וּם פַּעֲמַ֖יִם צָרָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y 'ad-siyri֣ym sebuki֔ym ukesabe'a֖m sebu'i֑ym 'u֨kּel֔u kּeqa֥shsh yabe֖shsh maleֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

כִּ֚י עַד־סִירִ֣ים סְבֻכִ֔ים וּכְסָבְאָ֖ם סְבוּאִ֑ים אֻ֨כְּל֔וּ כְּקַ֥שׁ יָבֵ֖שׁ מָלֵֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mimּe֣ke yatza֔ choshshe֥b 'al-yehva֖h ra'a֑h yo'e֖tz bּeliyּaֽ'al׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)There is one come out of you, that imagins evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor.

מִמֵּ֣ךְ יָצָ֔א חֹשֵׁ֥ב עַל־יְהוָ֖ה רָעָ֑ה יֹעֵ֖ץ בְּלִיָּֽעַל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֣h ׀ 'ama֣r yehva֗h 'im-shshelemiym֙ veke֣n rabּi֔ym veke֥n nago֖zּu ve'aba֑r ve'i֨nּiti֔ke lo֥ 'a'anּe֖ke 'ֽod׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thus says the LORD; "Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more."

כֹּ֣ה ׀ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה אִם־שְׁלֵמִים֙ וְכֵ֣ן רַבִּ֔ים וְכֵ֥ן נָגֹ֖זּוּ וְעָבָ֑ר וְעִ֨נִּתִ֔ךְ לֹ֥א אֲעַנֵּ֖ךְ עֽוֹד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֕h 'eshshebּo֥r mote֖hu meֽ'ala֑yike umoserota֖yike 'anatּeֽq׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"For now will I break his yoke from off you, and will burst your bonds in sunder."

וְעַתָּ֕ה אֶשְׁבֹּ֥ר מֹטֵ֖הוּ מֵֽעָלָ֑יִךְ וּמוֹסְרֹתַ֖יִךְ אֲנַתֵּֽק׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vetziua֤h 'ale֨yka֙ yehva֔h loֽ'-yizּara֥ mishshּimeka֖ '֑od mibּe֨yt 'elohe֜yka 'akeri֨yt pּe֧sel umasּeka֛h 'ashsi֥ym qibere֖ka kּi֥y qalּֽota׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD has given a commandment concerning you, that no more of your name be sown: out of the house of your gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make your grave; for you are vile.

וְצִוָּ֤ה עָלֶ֨יךָ֙ יְהוָ֔ה לֹֽא־יִזָּרַ֥ע מִשִּׁמְךָ֖ ע֑וֹד מִבֵּ֨ית אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ אַכְרִ֨ית פֶּ֧סֶל וּמַסֵּכָ֛ה אָשִׂ֥ים קִבְרֶ֖ךָ כִּ֥י קַלּֽוֹתָ׃פ
