Chapter 1
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y 'acharey֙ m֣ot yehoshshu֔'a vaֽyּishshe'alu֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l bּayhva֖h le'mo֑r mi֣y ya'aleh-lּa֧nu 'el-haֽkּena'ani֛y bּatּechilּa֖h lehilּa֥chem bּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?"

וַיְהִ֗י אַחֲרֵי֙ מ֣וֹת יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ וַֽיִּשְׁאֲלוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בַּיהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר מִ֣י יַעֲלֶה־לָּ֧נוּ אֶל־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י בַּתְּחִלָּ֖ה לְהִלָּ֥חֶם בּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehva֖h yehuda֣h ya'ale֑h hinּe֛h nata֥tּiy 'et-ha'a֖retz bּeyadֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD answered, "Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה יְהוּדָ֣ה יַעֲלֶ֑ה הִנֵּ֛ה נָתַ֥תִּי אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehudah֩ leshshime'֨on 'achi֜yv 'ale֧h 'itּi֣y begorali֗y veniֽlּachamah֙ bּaֽkּena'ani֔y vehalaketּi֧y gam-'ani֛y 'itּeka֖ bּegorale֑ka vayּe֥leke 'itּ֖o shshime'ֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, "Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites, and we in turn will go with you into yours." So the Simeonites went with them.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָה֩ לְשִׁמְע֨וֹן אָחִ֜יו עֲלֵ֧ה אִתִּ֣י בְגוֹרָלִ֗י וְנִֽלָּחֲמָה֙ בַּֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י וְהָלַכְתִּ֧י גַם־אֲנִ֛י אִתְּךָ֖ בְּגוֹרָלֶ֑ךָ וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אִתּ֖וֹ שִׁמְעֽוֹן׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'al yehuda֔h vayּitּe֧n yehva֛h 'et-hakּena'ani֥y vehapּerizּi֖y bּeyada֑m vayּakּ֣um bּebe֔zeq 'ashse֥ret 'alapi֖ym 'iֽyshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.

וַיַּ֣עַל יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיִּתֵּ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִ֥י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֖י בְּיָדָ֑ם וַיַּכּ֣וּם בְּבֶ֔זֶק עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִֽישׁ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽ֠yּimetze'u 'et-'adoni֥y be֨zeq֙ bּebe֔zeq vayּiֽlּacham֖u bּ֑o vayּakּ֕u 'et-haֽkּena'ani֖y ve'et-hapּerizּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites.

וַֽ֠יִּמְצְאוּ אֶת־אֲדֹנִ֥י בֶ֨זֶק֙ בְּבֶ֔זֶק וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ בּ֑וֹ וַיַּכּ֕וּ אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י וְאֶת־הַפְּרִזִּֽי׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨nas֙ 'ado֣niy be֔zeq vaֽyּiredּep֖u 'achara֑yv vayּo'chaz֣u 'ot֔o vaֽyeqatzּetz֔u 'et-bּehon֥ot yada֖yv veragelaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.

וַיָּ֨נָס֙ אֲדֹ֣נִי בֶ֔זֶק וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ אַחֲרָ֑יו וַיֹּאחֲז֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ וַֽיְקַצְּצ֔וּ אֶת־בְּהֹנ֥וֹת יָדָ֖יו וְרַגְלָֽיו׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'adoֽniy-be֗zeq shshibe'i֣ym ׀ melaki֡ym bּeֽhonot֩ yedeyhe֨m verageleyhe֜m mequtzּatzi֗ym hay֤u melaqּetiym֙ tּa֣chat shshulechani֔y kּa'ashshe֣r 'ashsi֔ytiy kּe֥n shshilּam-li֖y 'elohi֑ym vayebiy'u֥hu yerushshala֖im vayּa֥mat shshaֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲדֹֽנִי־בֶ֗זֶק שִׁבְעִ֣ים ׀ מְלָכִ֡ים בְּֽהֹנוֹת֩ יְדֵיהֶ֨ם וְרַגְלֵיהֶ֜ם מְקֻצָּצִ֗ים הָי֤וּ מְלַקְּטִים֙ תַּ֣חַת שֻׁלְחָנִ֔י כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֔יתִי כֵּ֥ן שִׁלַּם־לִ֖י אֱלֹהִ֑ים וַיְבִיאֻ֥הוּ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וַיָּ֥מָת שָֽׁם׃פ

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּilּacham֤u beneֽy-yehudah֙ bּiyr֣ushshalai֔m vayּilekּed֣u 'ota֔hּ vayּakּ֖uha lepiy-cha֑reb ve'et-ha'i֖yr shshilּech֥u ba'eֽshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.

וַיִּלָּחֲמ֤וּ בְנֵֽי־יְהוּדָה֙ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וַיִּלְכְּד֣וּ אוֹתָ֔הּ וַיַּכּ֖וּהָ לְפִי־חָ֑רֶב וְאֶת־הָעִ֖יר שִׁלְּח֥וּ בָאֵֽשׁ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'acha֗r yaֽredu֙ bּene֣y yehuda֔h lehilּache֖m bּaֽkּena'ani֑y yoshshe֣b haha֔r vehanּe֖geb vehashshּepelaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills.

וְאַחַ֗ר יָֽרְדוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם בַּֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י יוֹשֵׁ֣ב הָהָ֔ר וְהַנֶּ֖גֶב וְהַשְּׁפֵלָֽה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣leke yehuda֗h 'el-haֽkּena'aniy֙ hayּoshshe֣b bּecheber֔on veshshem-cheber֥on lepani֖ym qireya֣t 'arebּa֑ vayּakּ֛u 'et-shsheshsha֥y ve'et-'achiyma֖n ve'et-tּalemaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֗ה אֶל־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ הַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב בְּחֶבְר֔וֹן וְשֵׁם־חֶבְר֥וֹן לְפָנִ֖ים קִרְיַ֣ת אַרְבַּ֑ע וַיַּכּ֛וּ אֶת־שֵׁשַׁ֥י וְאֶת־אֲחִימַ֖ן וְאֶת־תַּלְמָֽי׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣leke mishshּa֔m 'el-yoshshebe֖y dּebi֑yr veshshem-dּebi֥yr lepani֖ym qireyat-seֽper׃
Edified Edition (EDE)From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ מִשָּׁ֔ם אֶל־יוֹשְׁבֵ֖י דְּבִ֑יר וְשֵׁם־דְּבִ֥יר לְפָנִ֖ים קִרְיַת־סֵֽפֶר׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer kּale֔b 'ashsher-yakּe֥h 'et-qireyat-se֖per ulekada֑hּ venata֥tּiy l֛o 'et-'akesa֥h bitּi֖y le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כָּלֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּ֥ה אֶת־קִרְיַת־סֵ֖פֶר וּלְכָדָ֑הּ וְנָתַ֥תִּי ל֛וֹ אֶת־עַכְסָ֥ה בִתִּ֖י לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּilekּedahּ֙ 'ateniy'e֣l bּen-qena֔z 'achi֥y kale֖b haqּato֣n mimּe֑nּu vayּitּen-l֛o 'et-'akesa֥h bitּ֖o le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave him his daughter Aksah in marriage.

וַֽיִּלְכְּדָהּ֙ עָתְנִיאֵ֣ל בֶּן־קְנַ֔ז אֲחִ֥י כָלֵ֖ב הַקָּטֹ֣ן מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וַיִּתֶּן־ל֛וֹ אֶת־עַכְסָ֥ה בִתּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y bּebo'a֗hּ vatּesiyte֨hu֙ lishshe'֤ol meֽ'et-'abi֨yha֙ hashsּade֔h vatּitzena֖ch me'a֣l hacham֑or vayּoֽ'mer-la֥hּ kּale֖b mah-lּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What can I do for you?"

וַיְהִ֣י בְּבוֹאָ֗הּ וַתְּסִיתֵ֨הוּ֙ לִשְׁא֤וֹל מֵֽאֵת־אָבִ֨יהָ֙ הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה וַתִּצְנַ֖ח מֵעַ֣ל הַחֲמ֑וֹר וַיֹּֽאמֶר־לָ֥הּ כָּלֵ֖ב מַה־לָּֽךְ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer l֜o haֽbah-lּi֣y beraka֗h kּi֣y 'e֤retz hanּe֨geb֙ netatּa֔niy venatatּa֥h li֖y gּulּo֣t ma֑yim vayּitּen-la֣hּ kּale֗b 'e֚t gּulּo֣t 'ilּi֔yt ve'e֖t gּulּo֥t tּachetּiֽyt׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)She replied, "Do me a special favour. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר ל֜וֹ הָֽבָה־לִּ֣י בְרָכָ֗ה כִּ֣י אֶ֤רֶץ הַנֶּ֨גֶב֙ נְתַתָּ֔נִי וְנָתַתָּ֥ה לִ֖י גֻּלֹּ֣ת מָ֑יִם וַיִּתֶּן־לָ֣הּ כָּלֵ֗ב אֵ֚ת גֻּלֹּ֣ת עִלִּ֔ית וְאֵ֖ת גֻּלֹּ֥ת תַּחְתִּֽית׃פ

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubene֣y qeyniy֩ chote֨n moshshe֜h 'al֨u me'i֤yr hatּemariym֙ 'et-bּene֣y yehuda֔h midebּa֣r yehuda֔h 'ashshe֖r bּene֣geb 'ara֑d vayּe֖leke vayּe֥shsheb 'et-ha'aֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.

וּבְנֵ֣י קֵינִי֩ חֹתֵ֨ן מֹשֶׁ֜ה עָל֨וּ מֵעִ֤יר הַתְּמָרִים֙ אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מִדְבַּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּנֶ֣גֶב עֲרָ֑ד וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב אֶת־הָעָֽם׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֤leke yehudah֙ 'et-shshime'֣on 'achi֔yv vayּakּ֕u 'et-haֽkּena'ani֖y yoshshe֣b tzepa֑t vayּachari֣ymu 'ota֔hּ vayּiqera֥ 'et-shshem-ha'i֖yr charemaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.

וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ יְהוּדָה֙ אֶת־שִׁמְע֣וֹן אָחִ֔יו וַיַּכּ֕וּ אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י יוֹשֵׁ֣ב צְפַ֑ת וַיַּחֲרִ֣ימוּ אוֹתָ֔הּ וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שֵׁם־הָעִ֖יר חָרְמָֽה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּilekּo֤d yehudah֙ 'et-'azּa֣h ve'et-gּebula֔hּ ve'eֽt-'ashsheqel֖on ve'et-gּebula֑hּ ve'et-'eqer֖on ve'et-gּebulaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron, each city with its territory.

וַיִּלְכֹּ֤ד יְהוּדָה֙ אֶת־עַזָּ֣ה וְאֶת־גְּבוּלָ֔הּ וְאֶֽת־אַשְׁקְל֖וֹן וְאֶת־גְּבוּלָ֑הּ וְאֶת־עֶקְר֖וֹן וְאֶת־גְּבוּלָֽהּ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y yehvah֙ 'etּ-yehuda֔h vayּo֖reshsh 'et-haha֑r kּi֣y lo֤ lehoriyshsh֙ 'et-yoshshebe֣y ha'e֔meq kּiy-re֥keb bּareze֖l laheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.

וַיְהִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֶתּ־יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖רֶשׁ אֶת־הָהָ֑ר כִּ֣י לֹ֤א לְהוֹרִישׁ֙ אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָעֵ֔מֶק כִּי־רֶ֥כֶב בַּרְזֶ֖ל לָהֶֽם׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּen֤u lekaleb֙ 'et-cheber֔on kּֽa'ashshe֖r dּibּe֣r moshshe֑h vayּ֣oreshsh mishshּa֔m 'et-shsheloshsha֖h bּene֥y ha'anaֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak.

וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ לְכָלֵב֙ אֶת־חֶבְר֔וֹן כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיּ֣וֹרֶשׁ מִשָּׁ֔ם אֶת־שְׁלֹשָׁ֖ה בְּנֵ֥י הָעֲנָֽק׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-hayebusiy֙ yoshshe֣b yerֽushshalai֔m lo֥ hori֖yshshu bּene֣y bineyami֑n vayּe֨shsheb hayebusi֜y 'et-bּene֤y bineyamin֙ bּiyr֣ushshalai֔m 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.

וְאֶת־הַיְבוּסִי֙ יֹשֵׁ֣ב יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם לֹ֥א הוֹרִ֖ישׁוּ בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ן וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב הַיְבוּסִ֜י אֶת־בְּנֵ֤י בִנְיָמִן֙ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ס

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'al֧u beyt-yose֛p gּam-he֖m bּeֽyt-'e֑l vaֽyhva֖h 'imּaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them.

וַיַּעֲל֧וּ בֵית־יוֹסֵ֛ף גַּם־הֵ֖ם בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל וַֽיהוָ֖ה עִמָּֽם׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּati֥yru beyt-yose֖p bּebeֽyt-'e֑l veshshem-ha'i֥yr lepani֖ym lֽuz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),

וַיָּתִ֥ירוּ בֵית־יוֹסֵ֖ף בְּבֵֽית־אֵ֑ל וְשֵׁם־הָעִ֥יר לְפָנִ֖ים לֽוּז׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּire'u֙ hashshּo֣meri֔ym 'i֖yshsh yotze֣ min-ha'i֑yr vayּo֣'meru l֗o hare'e֤nu na'֙ 'et-meb֣o ha'i֔yr ve'ashsi֥ynu 'imּeka֖ chaֽsed׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, "Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well."

וַיִּרְאוּ֙ הַשֹּׁ֣מְרִ֔ים אִ֖ישׁ יוֹצֵ֣א מִן־הָעִ֑יר וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ ל֗וֹ הַרְאֵ֤נוּ נָא֙ אֶת־מְב֣וֹא הָעִ֔יר וְעָשִׂ֥ינוּ עִמְּךָ֖ חָֽסֶד׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּare'em֙ 'et-meb֣o ha'i֔yr vayּakּ֥u 'et-ha'i֖yr lepiy-cha֑reb ve'et-ha'i֥yshsh ve'et-kּal-mishshepּachetּ֖o shshilּeֽchu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family.

וַיַּרְאֵם֙ אֶת־מְב֣וֹא הָעִ֔יר וַיַּכּ֥וּ אֶת־הָעִ֖יר לְפִי־חָ֑רֶב וְאֶת־הָאִ֥ישׁ וְאֶת־כָּל־מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֖וֹ שִׁלֵּֽחוּ׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣leke ha'i֔yshsh 'e֖retz hachitּi֑ym vayּi֣ben 'i֗yr vayּiqera֤ shshemahּ֙ l֔uz h֣u shshema֔hּ 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ הָאִ֔ישׁ אֶ֖רֶץ הַחִתִּ֑ים וַיִּ֣בֶן עִ֗יר וַיִּקְרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙ ל֔וּז ה֣וּא שְׁמָ֔הּ עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃פ

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): velo'-hori֣yshsh menashshּe֗h 'et-bּeyt-shshe'a֣n ve'et-bּenoteyha֮ ve'et-tּa'ena֣ke ve'et-bּenoteyha֒ ve'et-yshb yoshshebe֨y d֜or ve'et-bּenote֗yha ve'et-yoshshebe֤y yibele'am֙ ve'et-bּenote֔yha ve'et-yoshshebe֥y megidּ֖o ve'et-bּenote֑yha vayּ֨o'el֙ haֽkּena'ani֔y lashshe֖bet bּa'a֥retz hazּoֽ't׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.

וְלֹא־הוֹרִ֣ישׁ מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה אֶת־בֵּית־שְׁאָ֣ן וְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶיהָ֮ וְאֶת־תַּעְנַ֣ךְ וְאֶת־בְּנֹתֶיהָ֒ וְאֶת־ישב יֹשְׁבֵ֨י ד֜וֹר וְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶ֗יהָ וְאֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵ֤י יִבְלְעָם֙ וְאֶת־בְּנֹתֶ֔יהָ וְאֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵ֥י מְגִדּ֖וֹ וְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶ֑יהָ וַיּ֨וֹאֶל֙ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י לָשֶׁ֖בֶת בָּאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּֽאת׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayehiy֙ kּiֽy-chaza֣q yishsera'e֔l vayּa֥shsem 'et-haֽkּena'ani֖y lama֑s vehore֖yshsh lo֥ horiyshshֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labour but never drove them out completely.

וַֽיְהִי֙ כִּֽי־חָזַ֣ק יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י לָמַ֑ס וְהוֹרֵ֖ישׁ לֹ֥א הוֹרִישֽׁוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'epera֨yim֙ lo֣ hori֔yshsh 'et-haֽkּena'ani֖y hayּoshshe֣b bּega֑zer vayּe֧shsheb haֽkּena'ani֛y bּeqirebּ֖o bּegaֽzer׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.

וְאֶפְרַ֨יִם֙ לֹ֣א הוֹרִ֔ישׁ אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י הַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב בְּגָ֑זֶר וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י בְּקִרְבּ֖וֹ בְּגָֽזֶר׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): zebulu֗n lo֤ horiyshsh֙ 'et-yoshshebe֣y qiter֔on ve'et-yoshshebe֖y nahalo֑l vayּe֤shsheb haֽkּena'aniy֙ bּeqirebּ֔o vayּiֽhey֖u lamaֽs׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun subjected them to forced labour.

זְבוּלֻ֗ן לֹ֤א הוֹרִישׁ֙ אֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י קִטְר֔וֹן וְאֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵ֖י נַהֲלֹ֑ל וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ בְּקִרְבּ֔וֹ וַיִּֽהְי֖וּ לָמַֽס׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ashshe֗r lo֤ horiyshsh֙ 'et-yoshshebe֣y 'akּ֔o ve'et-yoshshebe֖y tziyd֑on ve'et-'achela֤b ve'et-'akeziyb֙ ve'et-chelebּa֔h ve'et-'api֖yq ve'et-rechoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Aksib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob.

אָשֵׁ֗ר לֹ֤א הוֹרִישׁ֙ אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֣י עַכּ֔וֹ וְאֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵ֖י צִיד֑וֹן וְאֶת־אַחְלָ֤ב וְאֶת־אַכְזִיב֙ וְאֶת־חֶלְבָּ֔ה וְאֶת־אֲפִ֖יק וְאֶת־רְחֹֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨shsheb֙ ha'a֣shsheri֔y bּeqe֥reb haֽkּena'ani֖y yoshshebe֣y ha'a֑retz kּi֖y lo֥ horiyshshֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out.

וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב֙ הָאָ֣שֵׁרִ֔י בְּקֶ֥רֶב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּ֖י לֹ֥א הוֹרִישֽׁוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): napetּali֗y loֽ'-hori֞yshsh 'et-yoshshebe֤y beֽyt-shshe֨meshsh֙ ve'et-yoshshebe֣y beyt-'ana֔t vayּe֕shsheb bּeqe֥reb haֽkּena'ani֖y yoshshebe֣y ha'a֑retz veyoshshebe֤y beֽyt-shshe֨meshsh֙ ube֣yt 'ana֔t hay֥u lahe֖m lamaֽs׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced labourers for them.

נַפְתָּלִ֗י לֹֽא־הוֹרִ֞ישׁ אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֤י בֵֽית־שֶׁ֨מֶשׁ֙ וְאֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֣י בֵית־עֲנָ֔ת וַיֵּ֕שֶׁב בְּקֶ֥רֶב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ וְיֹשְׁבֵ֤י בֵֽית־שֶׁ֨מֶשׁ֙ וּבֵ֣ית עֲנָ֔ת הָי֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם לָמַֽס׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּilechatz֧u ha'emori֛y 'et-bּeney-da֖n haha֑rah kּiy-lo֥ netan֖o lare֥det la'eֽmeq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.

וַיִּלְחֲצ֧וּ הָאֱמֹרִ֛י אֶת־בְּנֵי־דָ֖ן הָהָ֑רָה כִּי־לֹ֥א נְתָנ֖וֹ לָרֶ֥דֶת לָעֵֽמֶק׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּ֤o'el haֽ'emoriy֙ lashshe֣bet bּehar-che֔res bּe'ayּal֖on ubeshshaֽ'alebi֑ym vatּikebּad֙ ya֣d bּeyt-yose֔p vayּihey֖u lamaֽs׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the Amorites were determined also to hold out on Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labour.

וַיּ֤וֹאֶל הָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ לָשֶׁ֣בֶת בְּהַר־חֶ֔רֶס בְּאַיָּל֖וֹן וּבְשַֽׁעַלְבִ֑ים וַתִּכְבַּד֙ יַ֣ד בֵּית־יוֹסֵ֔ף וַיִּהְי֖וּ לָמַֽס׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ugebul֙ ha'emori֔y miֽmּa'ale֖h 'aqerabּi֑ym mehasּe֖la vamaֽ'elah׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.

וּגְבוּל֙ הָאֱמֹרִ֔י מִֽמַּעֲלֵ֖ה עַקְרַבִּ֑ים מֵהַסֶּ֖לַע וָמָֽעְלָה׃פ
