Jonah

Chapter 1

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ dּebar-yehva֔h 'el-yona֥h ben-'amitּa֖y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־יוֹנָ֥ה בֶן־אֲמִתַּ֖י לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): q֠um le֧ke 'el-niֽyneve֛h ha'i֥yr hagּedola֖h uqera֣ 'ale֑yha kּiֽy-'aleta֥h ra'ata֖m lepanaֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before Me."

ק֠וּם לֵ֧ךְ אֶל־נִֽינְוֵ֛ה הָעִ֥יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה וּקְרָ֣א עָלֶ֑יהָ כִּֽי־עָלְתָ֥ה רָעָתָ֖ם לְפָנָֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤qam yonah֙ libero֣cha tּareshshi֔yshshah milּipene֖y yehva֑h vayּe֨red yap֜o vayּimetza֥ 'aniyּa֣h ׀ bּa'a֣h tareshshi֗yshsh vayּitּe֨n shsekara֜hּ vayּe֤red bּahּ֙ lab֤o 'imּahem֙ tּareshshi֔yshshah milּipene֖y yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

וַיָּ֤קָם יוֹנָה֙ לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֨רֶד יָפ֜וֹ וַיִּמְצָ֥א אָנִיָּ֣ה ׀ בָּאָ֣ה תַרְשִׁ֗ישׁ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שְׂכָרָ֜הּ וַיֵּ֤רֶד בָּהּ֙ לָב֤וֹא עִמָּהֶם֙ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyhva֗h heti֤yl rֽucha-gּedolah֙ 'el-hayּa֔m vayehi֥y saֽ'ar-gּad֖ol bּayּa֑m veha֣'oniyּa֔h chishshּeba֖h lehishshּabeֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

וַֽיהוָ֗ה הֵטִ֤יל רֽוּחַ־גְּדוֹלָה֙ אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם וַיְהִ֥י סַֽעַר־גָּד֖וֹל בַּיָּ֑ם וְהָ֣אֳנִיָּ֔ה חִשְּׁבָ֖ה לְהִשָּׁבֵֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽyre'֣u hamּalּachi֗ym vaֽyּize'aqu֮ 'i֣yshsh 'el-'elohayv֒ vayּati֨lu 'et-hakּeli֜ym 'ashshe֤r bּaֽ'oniyּah֙ 'el-hayּa֔m lehaqe֖l meֽ'aleyhe֑m veyona֗h yarad֙ 'el-yarekּete֣y hasּepiyna֔h vayּishshekּa֖b vayּeradaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man to his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ הַמַּלָּחִ֗ים וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֮ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־אֱלֹהָיו֒ וַיָּטִ֨לוּ אֶת־הַכֵּלִ֜ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּֽאֳנִיָּה֙ אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם לְהָקֵ֖ל מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְיוֹנָ֗ה יָרַד֙ אֶל־יַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַסְּפִינָ֔ה וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב וַיֵּרָדַֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֤b 'elayv֙ ra֣b hachobe֔l vayּo֥'mer l֖o mah-lּeka֣ niredּa֑m q֚um qera֣ 'el-'elohe֔yka 'ula֞y yite'ashshּe֧t ha'elohi֛ym la֖nu velo֥ no'beֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, "What meanest you, O sleeper? arise, call upon your God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not."

וַיִּקְרַ֤ב אֵלָיו֙ רַ֣ב הַחֹבֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ מַה־לְּךָ֣ נִרְדָּ֑ם ק֚וּם קְרָ֣א אֶל־אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אוּלַ֞י יִתְעַשֵּׁ֧ת הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים לָ֖נוּ וְלֹ֥א נֹאבֵֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֞u 'i֣yshsh 'el-re'e֗hu leku֙ venapּi֣ylah gֽoral֔ot vene֣de'a֔h bּeshshelּemi֛y hara'a֥h hazּo֖'t la֑nu vayּapּi֨lu֙ gּֽoral֔ot vayּipּo֥l hagּora֖l 'al-yonaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And they said every one to his fellow, "Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us." So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֗הוּ לְכוּ֙ וְנַפִּ֣ילָה גֽוֹרָל֔וֹת וְנֵ֣דְעָ֔ה בְּשֶׁלְּמִ֛י הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את לָ֑נוּ וַיַּפִּ֨לוּ֙ גּֽוֹרָל֔וֹת וַיִּפֹּ֥ל הַגּוֹרָ֖ל עַל־יוֹנָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֣u 'ela֔yv hagּiydah-nּa֣ la֔nu bּa'ashshe֛r lemiy-hara'a֥h hazּo֖'t la֑nu mah-mּela'ketּeka֙ ume'a֣yin tּab֔o ma֣h 'aretze֔ka ve'eֽy-mizּe֥h 'a֖m 'aֽtּah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then said they to him, "Tell us, we pray you, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is your occupation? and Where comest you? what is your country? and of what people are you?"

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֔יו הַגִּידָה־נָּ֣א לָ֔נוּ בַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר לְמִי־הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את לָ֑נוּ מַה־מְּלַאכְתְּךָ֙ וּמֵאַ֣יִן תָּב֔וֹא מָ֣ה אַרְצֶ֔ךָ וְאֵֽי־מִזֶּ֥ה עַ֖ם אָֽתָּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'aleyhe֖m 'iberi֣y 'ano֑kiy ve'et-yehva֞h 'elohe֤y hashshּama֨yim֙ 'ani֣y yare֔ 'ashsher-'ashsa֥h 'et-hayּa֖m ve'et-hayּabּashshaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And he said to them, "I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which has made the sea and the dry land."

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם עִבְרִ֣י אָנֹ֑כִי וְאֶת־יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַשָּׁמַ֨יִם֙ אֲנִ֣י יָרֵ֔א אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֥ה אֶת־הַיָּ֖ם וְאֶת־הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽyre'֤u haֽ'anashshiym֙ yire'a֣h gedola֔h vayּo'mer֥u 'ela֖yv mah-zּo֣'t 'ashsi֑yta kּiֽy-yade'֣u ha'anashshi֗ym kּiֽy-milּipene֤y yehvah֙ h֣u bore֔cha kּi֥y higּi֖yd laheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, "Why hast you done this?" For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

וַיִּֽירְא֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ יִרְאָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֔ה וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו מַה־זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֑יתָ כִּֽי־יָדְע֣וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים כִּֽי־מִלִּפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא בֹרֵ֔חַ כִּ֥י הִגִּ֖יד לָהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֤u 'elayv֙ mah-nּa֣'ashseh lּa֔ke veyishshetּo֥q hayּa֖m meֽ'ale֑ynu kּi֥y hayּa֖m hole֥ke veso'eֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then said they to him, "What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?" for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ אֵלָיו֙ מַה־נַּ֣עֲשֶׂה לָּ֔ךְ וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם מֵֽעָלֵ֑ינוּ כִּ֥י הַיָּ֖ם הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'aleyhe֗m shsa'֨uniy֙ vahatiylu֣niy 'el-hayּa֔m veyishshetּo֥q hayּa֖m meֽ'aleyke֑m kּi֚y yode֣'a 'a֔niy kּi֣y beshshelּi֔y hasּa֧'ar hagּad֛ol hazּe֖h 'aleykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And he said to them, "Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם שָׂא֨וּנִי֙ וַהֲטִילֻ֣נִי אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י יוֹדֵ֣עַ אָ֔נִי כִּ֣י בְשֶׁלִּ֔י הַסַּ֧עַר הַגָּד֛וֹל הַזֶּ֖ה עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּachetּer֣u ha'anashshi֗ym lehashshi֛yb 'el-hayּabּashsha֖h velo֣ yako֑lu kּi֣y hayּa֔m hole֥ke veso'e֖r 'aleyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

וַיַּחְתְּר֣וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים לְהָשִׁ֛יב אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה וְלֹ֣א יָכֹ֑לוּ כִּ֣י הַיָּ֔ם הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵ֖ר עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqere'֨u 'el-yehva֜h vayּo'mer֗u 'anּa֤h yehvah֙ 'al-na֣ no'beda֗h bּene֨peshsh֙ ha'i֣yshsh hazּe֔h ve'al-tּitּe֥n 'ale֖ynu dּa֣m naqi֑y kּiֽy-'atּa֣h yehva֔h kּa'ashshe֥r chapa֖tzetּa 'ashsiֽyta׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Wherefore they cried to the LORD, and said, "We beseech You, O LORD, we beseech You, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for You, O LORD, hast done as it pleased You."

וַיִּקְרְא֨וּ אֶל־יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ אָנָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ אַל־נָ֣א נֹאבְדָ֗ה בְּנֶ֨פֶשׁ֙ הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּ֔ה וְאַל־תִּתֵּ֥ן עָלֵ֖ינוּ דָּ֣ם נָקִ֑יא כִּֽי־אַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר חָפַ֖צְתָּ עָשִֽׂיתָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishse'u֙ 'et-yona֔h vayetilu֖hu 'el-hayּa֑m vayּa'amo֥d hayּa֖m mizּa'epּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־יוֹנָ֔ה וַיְטִלֻ֖הוּ אֶל־הַיָּ֑ם וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד הַיָּ֖ם מִזַּעְפּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽyre'֧u ha'anashshi֛ym yire'a֥h gedola֖h 'et-yehva֑h vayּiֽzebּechu-ze֨bach֙ laֽyhva֔h vaֽyּidּer֖u nedariֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD, and made vows.

וַיִּֽירְא֧וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים יִרְאָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה אֶת־יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּֽזְבְּחוּ־זֶ֨בַח֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה וַֽיִּדְּר֖וּ נְדָרִֽים׃
