Chapter 1

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּebar-yehvah֙ 'ashshe֣r haya֔h 'el-yo'e֖l bּen-pּetu'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.

דְּבַר־יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֔ה אֶל־יוֹאֵ֖ל בֶּן־פְּתוּאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshime'u-zo't֙ hazּeqeni֔ym vehaֽ'azi֔ynu kּo֖l yoshshebe֣y ha'a֑retz heha֤yetah zּo't֙ bּiֽymeyke֔m ve'i֖m bּiyme֥y 'aboֽteykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Hear this, you old men, and give ear, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?

שִׁמְעוּ־זֹאת֙ הַזְּקֵנִ֔ים וְהַֽאֲזִ֔ינוּ כֹּ֖ל יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ הֶהָ֤יְתָה זֹּאת֙ בִּֽימֵיכֶ֔ם וְאִ֖ם בִּימֵ֥י אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ale֖yha libeneyke֣m sapּe֑ru ubeneykem֙ libeneyhe֔m ubeneyhe֖m led֥or 'acheֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Tell you your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

עָלֶ֖יהָ לִבְנֵיכֶ֣ם סַפֵּ֑רוּ וּבְנֵיכֶם֙ לִבְנֵיהֶ֔ם וּבְנֵיהֶ֖ם לְד֥וֹר אַחֵֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ye֤ter hagּazam֙ 'aka֣l haֽ'arebּe֔h veye֥ter ha'arebּe֖h 'aka֣l hayּa֑leq veye֣ter hayּe֔leq 'aka֖l hechasiֽyl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)That which the palmerworm has left has the locust eaten; and that which the locust has left has the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm has left has the caterpillar eaten.

יֶ֤תֶר הַגָּזָם֙ אָכַ֣ל הָֽאַרְבֶּ֔ה וְיֶ֥תֶר הָאַרְבֶּ֖ה אָכַ֣ל הַיָּ֑לֶק וְיֶ֣תֶר הַיֶּ֔לֶק אָכַ֖ל הֶחָסִֽיל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): haqi֤ytzu shshikּoriym֙ ubek֔u veheyli֖lu kּal-shsho֣tey ya֑yin 'al-'asi֕ys kּi֥y nikera֖t mipּiykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Awake, you drunkards, and weep; and howl, all you drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

הָקִ֤יצוּ שִׁכּוֹרִים֙ וּבְכ֔וּ וְהֵילִ֖לוּ כָּל־שֹׁ֣תֵי יָ֑יִן עַל־עָסִ֕יס כִּ֥י נִכְרַ֖ת מִפִּיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-goy֙ 'ala֣h 'al-'aretzi֔y 'atz֖um ve'e֣yn misepּa֑r shshinּayv֙ shshinּe֣y 'areye֔h uֽmetalּe'֥ot labi֖y lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For a nation is come up upon My land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the cheek teeth of a great lion.

כִּֽי־גוֹי֙ עָלָ֣ה עַל־אַרְצִ֔י עָצ֖וּם וְאֵ֣ין מִסְפָּ֑ר שִׁנָּיו֙ שִׁנֵּ֣י אַרְיֵ֔ה וּֽמְתַלְּע֥וֹת לָבִ֖יא לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsa֤m gּapeniy֙ leshshamּa֔h ute'enati֖y liqetzapa֑h chashso֤p chashsapahּ֙ vehishsheli֔yke hilebּi֖ynu shsariygeֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He has laid My vine waste, and barked My fig tree: he has made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.

שָׂ֤ם גַּפְנִי֙ לְשַׁמָּ֔ה וּתְאֵנָתִ֖י לִקְצָפָ֑ה חָשֹׂ֤ף חֲשָׂפָהּ֙ וְהִשְׁלִ֔יךְ הִלְבִּ֖ינוּ שָׂרִיגֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): eli֕y kּibetula֥h chaguֽrat-shsa֖q 'al-bּa֥'al ne'ureֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

אֱלִ֕י כִּבְתוּלָ֥ה חֲגֻֽרַת־שַׂ֖ק עַל־בַּ֥עַל נְעוּרֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hakera֥t minecha֛h vane֖seke mibּe֣yt yehva֑h 'aֽbelu֙ hakּo֣hani֔ym meshsharete֖y yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD'S ministers, mourn.

הָכְרַ֥ת מִנְחָ֛ה וָנֶ֖סֶךְ מִבֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה אָֽבְלוּ֙ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים מְשָׁרְתֵ֖י יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshudּa֣d shsade֔h 'abela֖h 'adama֑h kּi֚y shshudּa֣d dּaga֔n hobi֥yshsh tּiyr֖oshsh 'umela֥l yitzehaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The field is wasted, the land mourns; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languishes.

שֻׁדַּ֣ד שָׂדֶ֔ה אָבְלָ֖ה אֲדָמָ֑ה כִּ֚י שֻׁדַּ֣ד דָּגָ֔ן הוֹבִ֥ישׁ תִּיר֖וֹשׁ אֻמְלַ֥ל יִצְהָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hobi֣yshshu 'ikּari֗ym heyli֨ylu֙ kּoֽremi֔ym 'al-chitּa֖h ve'al-shse'ora֑h kּi֥y 'aba֖d qetzi֥yr shsadeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Be you ashamed, O you farmers; howl, O you vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.

הֹבִ֣ישׁוּ אִכָּרִ֗ים הֵילִ֨ילוּ֙ כֹּֽרְמִ֔ים עַל־חִטָּ֖ה וְעַל־שְׂעֹרָ֑ה כִּ֥י אָבַ֖ד קְצִ֥יר שָׂדֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hagּe֣pen hobi֔yshshah vehatּe'ena֖h 'umela֑lah rimּ֞on gּam-tּama֣r vetapּ֗ucha kּal-'atze֤y hashsּadeh֙ yabe֔shshu kּiֽy-hobi֥yshsh shsashs֖on min-bּene֥y 'adaֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

הַגֶּ֣פֶן הוֹבִ֔ישָׁה וְהַתְּאֵנָ֖ה אֻמְלָ֑לָה רִמּ֞וֹן גַּם־תָּמָ֣ר וְתַפּ֗וּחַ כָּל־עֲצֵ֤י הַשָּׂדֶה֙ יָבֵ֔שׁוּ כִּֽי־הֹבִ֥ישׁ שָׂשׂ֖וֹן מִן־בְּנֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): chiger֨u vesiped֜u hakּohani֗ym heyli֨ylu֙ meshsharete֣y mizebּe֔cha bּo֚'u li֣ynu bashsּaqּi֔ym meshsharete֖y 'eloha֑y kּi֥y nimena֛ mibּe֥yt 'eloheyke֖m minecha֥h vanaֽseke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Gird yourselves, and lament, you priests: howl, you ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.

חִגְר֨וּ וְסִפְד֜וּ הַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים הֵילִ֨ילוּ֙ מְשָׁרְתֵ֣י מִזְבֵּ֔חַ בֹּ֚אוּ לִ֣ינוּ בַשַּׂקִּ֔ים מְשָׁרְתֵ֖י אֱלֹהָ֑י כִּ֥י נִמְנַ֛ע מִבֵּ֥ית אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם מִנְחָ֥ה וָנָֽסֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): qadּeshshu-tzom֙ qire'֣u 'atzara֔h 'isep֣u zeqeni֗ym kּo֚l yoshshebe֣y ha'a֔retz bּe֖yt yehva֣h 'eloheyke֑m veza'aq֖u 'el-yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Sanctify you a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry to the LORD,

קַדְּשׁוּ־צוֹם֙ קִרְא֣וּ עֲצָרָ֔ה אִסְפ֣וּ זְקֵנִ֗ים כֹּ֚ל יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ בֵּ֖ית יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם וְזַעֲק֖וּ אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): aha֖hּ layּ֑om kּi֤y qarob֙ y֣om yehva֔h ukeshsho֖d mishshadּa֥y yabֽo'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

אֲהָ֖הּ לַיּ֑וֹם כִּ֤י קָרוֹב֙ י֣וֹם יְהוָ֔ה וּכְשֹׁ֖ד מִשַׁדַּ֥י יָבֽוֹא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hal֛o ne֥ged 'eyne֖ynu 'o֣kel nikera֑t mibּe֥yt 'elohe֖ynu shsimecha֥h vagiֽyl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yes, joy and gladness from the house of our God?

הֲל֛וֹא נֶ֥גֶד עֵינֵ֖ינוּ אֹ֣כֶל נִכְרָ֑ת מִבֵּ֥ית אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ שִׂמְחָ֥ה וָגִֽיל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): abeshsh֣u perud֗ot tּa֚chat megerepo֣teyhe֔m nashsha֨mּu֙ 'oֽtzar֔ot neheres֖u mamּegur֑ot kּi֥y hobi֖yshsh dּagaֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered.

עָבְשׁ֣וּ פְרֻד֗וֹת תַּ֚חַת מֶגְרְפֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם נָשַׁ֨מּוּ֙ אֹֽצָר֔וֹת נֶהֶרְס֖וּ מַמְּגֻר֑וֹת כִּ֥י הֹבִ֖ישׁ דָּגָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mah-nּe'enecha֣h behema֗h nabo֨ku֙ 'edere֣y baqa֔r kּi֛y 'e֥yn mire'e֖h lahe֑m gּam-'edere֥y hatzּo֖'n ne'eshshaֽmu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

מַה־נֶּאֶנְחָ֣ה בְהֵמָ֗ה נָבֹ֨כוּ֙ עֶדְרֵ֣י בָקָ֔ר כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין מִרְעֶ֖ה לָהֶ֑ם גַּם־עֶדְרֵ֥י הַצֹּ֖אן נֶאְשָֽׁמוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ele֥yka yehva֖h 'eqera֑ kּi֣y 'e֗shsh 'aֽkelah֙ ne'֣ot midebּa֔r vele֣haba֔h lihata֖h kּal-'atze֥y hashsּadeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)O LORD, to You will I cry: for the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field.

אֵלֶ֥יךָ יְהוָ֖ה אֶקְרָ֑א כִּ֣י אֵ֗שׁ אָֽכְלָה֙ נְא֣וֹת מִדְבָּ֔ר וְלֶ֣הָבָ֔ה לִהֲטָ֖ה כָּל־עֲצֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam-bּaham֥ot shsade֖h tּa'ar֣og 'ele֑yka kּi֤y yaֽbeshshu֙ 'api֣yqey ma֔yim ve'e֕shsh 'akela֖h ne'֥ot hamּidebּaֽr׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The beasts of the field cry also to You: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

גַּם־בַּהֲמ֥וֹת שָׂדֶ֖ה תַּעֲר֣וֹג אֵלֶ֑יךָ כִּ֤י יָֽבְשׁוּ֙ אֲפִ֣יקֵי מָ֔יִם וְאֵ֕שׁ אָכְלָ֖ה נְא֥וֹת הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃פ
