Chapter 1

Phonetic (Hebrew): i֛yshsh haya֥h be'eֽretz-'֖utz 'iyּ֣ob shshem֑o vehaya֣h ׀ ha'i֣yshsh hah֗u tּa֧m veyashsha֛r viyre֥ 'elohi֖ym vesa֥r meraֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the land of Uz there lived a man named Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and turned away from evil.

אִ֛ישׁ הָיָ֥ה בְאֶֽרֶץ־ע֖וּץ אִיּ֣וֹב שְׁמ֑וֹ וְהָיָ֣ה ׀ הָאִ֣ישׁ הַה֗וּא תָּ֧ם וְיָשָׁ֛ר וִירֵ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְסָ֥ר מֵרָֽע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiua֥ledu l֛o shshibe'a֥h bani֖ym veshshal֥oshsh bּanֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He had seven sons and three daughters,

וַיִּוָּ֥לְדוּ ל֛וֹ שִׁבְעָ֥ה בָנִ֖ים וְשָׁל֥וֹשׁ בָּנֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y mi֠qenehu shshiֽbe'a֨t 'alepey-tzo֜'n ushshelo֧shshet 'alepe֣y gemalּi֗ym vachame֨shsh me'֤ot tzeֽmed-bּaqar֙ vachame֣shsh me'֣ot 'aton֔ot va'abudּa֖h rabּa֣h me'o֑d vayehiy֙ ha'i֣yshsh hah֔u gּad֖ol mikּal-bּeney-qeֽdem׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred female donkeys. He also had a very large number of servants, and was the most influential man among all the people of the East.

וַיְהִ֣י מִ֠קְנֵהוּ שִֽׁבְעַ֨ת אַלְפֵי־צֹ֜אן וּשְׁלֹ֧שֶׁת אַלְפֵ֣י גְמַלִּ֗ים וַחֲמֵ֨שׁ מֵא֤וֹת צֶֽמֶד־בָּקָר֙ וַחֲמֵ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת אֲתוֹנ֔וֹת וַעֲבֻדָּ֖ה רַבָּ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד וַיְהִי֙ הָאִ֣ישׁ הַה֔וּא גָּד֖וֹל מִכָּל־בְּנֵי־קֶֽדֶם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehalek֤u banayv֙ ve'ashs֣u mishshetּe֔h bּe֖yt 'i֣yshsh yom֑o veshshalech֗u veqare'u֙ lishshelo֣shshet 'chytyhm 'acheyֽoteyhe֔m le'eko֥l velishshetּ֖ot 'imּaheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)His sons used to take turns holding banquets in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

וְהָלְכ֤וּ בָנָיו֙ וְעָשׂ֣וּ מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה בֵּ֖ית אִ֣ישׁ יוֹמ֑וֹ וְשָׁלְח֗וּ וְקָרְאוּ֙ לִשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת אחיתיהם אַחְיֽוֹתֵיהֶ֔ם לֶאֱכֹ֥ל וְלִשְׁתּ֖וֹת עִמָּהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֡y kּi֣y hiqּiypֽu֩ yeme֨y hamּishshetּe֜h vayּishshela֧ch 'iyּ֣ob vaֽyeqadּeshshe֗m vehishshekּi֣ym bּabּoqer֮ vehe'ela֣h 'olot֮ misepּa֣r kּulּam֒ kּi֚y 'ama֣r 'iyּ֔ob 'ulay֙ chate'֣u bana֔y uberak֥u 'elohi֖ym bּilebaba֑m kּa֛kah ya'ashse֥h 'iyּ֖ob kּal-hayּamiֽym׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)When a cycle of banquets was finished, Job would send for them and purify them. He would rise early in the morning and offer a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job’s regular custom.

וַיְהִ֡י כִּ֣י הִקִּיפֽוּ֩ יְמֵ֨י הַמִּשְׁתֶּ֜ה וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח אִיּ֣וֹב וַֽיְקַדְּשֵׁ֗ם וְהִשְׁכִּ֣ים בַּבֹּקֶר֮ וְהֶעֱלָ֣ה עֹלוֹת֮ מִסְפַּ֣ר כֻּלָּם֒ כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר אִיּ֔וֹב אוּלַי֙ חָטְא֣וּ בָנַ֔י וּבֵרֲכ֥וּ אֱלֹהִ֖ים בִּלְבָבָ֑ם כָּ֛כָה יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה אִיּ֖וֹב כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y hayּ֔om vayּabo֨'u֙ bּene֣y ha'elohi֔ym lehiteyatzּe֖b 'al-yehva֑h vayּab֥o gaֽm-hashsּata֖n bּetokaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and the adversary also came among them.

וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב עַל־יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּב֥וֹא גַֽם־הַשָּׂטָ֖ן בְּתוֹכָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer yehva֛h 'el-hashsּata֖n me'a֣yin tּabo֑ vayּa֨'an hashsּata֤n 'et-yehvah֙ vayּo'ma֔r mishshּ֣ut bּa'a֔retz umeֽhitehalּe֖ke bּaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to the adversary, "Where have you come from?" He answered, "From roaming through the earth and walking back and forth in it."

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֖ן מֵאַ֣יִן תָּבֹ֑א וַיַּ֨עַן הַשָּׂטָ֤ן אֶת־יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר מִשּׁ֣וּט בָּאָ֔רֶץ וּמֵֽהִתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ בָּֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-hashsּata֔n hashsa֥metּa libּeka֖ 'al-'abedּi֣y 'iyּ֑ob kּi֣y 'e֤yn kּamo֨hu֙ bּa'a֔retz 'i֣yshsh tּa֧m veyashsha֛r yere֥ 'elohi֖ym vesa֥r meraֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD said to the adversary, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֔ן הֲשַׂ֥מְתָּ לִבְּךָ֖ עַל־עַבְדִּ֣י אִיּ֑וֹב כִּ֣י אֵ֤ין כָּמֹ֨הוּ֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ אִ֣ישׁ תָּ֧ם וְיָשָׁ֛ר יְרֵ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְסָ֥ר מֵרָֽע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧'an hashsּata֛n 'et-yehva֖h vayּo'ma֑r haֽchinּa֔m yare֥ 'iyּ֖ob 'elohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Does Job fear God for nothing?" the adversary replied.

וַיַּ֧עַן הַשָּׂטָ֛ן אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הַֽחִנָּ֔ם יָרֵ֥א אִיּ֖וֹב אֱלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): haloֽ'-'t 'a֠tּah shsa֣ketּa ba'ad֧o ube'ad-bּeyt֛o ube'a֥d kּal-'ashsher-l֖o misּabi֑yb ma'ashse֤h yadayv֙ bּera֔ketּa umiqene֖hu pּara֥tz bּa'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land."

הֲלֹֽא־את אַ֠תָּה שַׂ֣כְתָּ בַעֲד֧וֹ וּבְעַד־בֵּית֛וֹ וּבְעַ֥ד כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־ל֖וֹ מִסָּבִ֑יב מַעֲשֵׂ֤ה יָדָיו֙ בֵּרַ֔כְתָּ וּמִקְנֵ֖הוּ פָּרַ֥ץ בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ulam֙ shsheֽlaֽch-na֣ yaֽdeka֔ vega֖ bּekal-'ashsher-l֑o 'im-lo֥ 'al-pּane֖yka yebarakeֽkּa׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."

וְאוּלָם֙ שְֽׁלַֽח־נָ֣א יָֽדְךָ֔ וְגַ֖ע בְּכָל־אֲשֶׁר־ל֑וֹ אִם־לֹ֥א עַל־פָּנֶ֖יךָ יְבָרֲכֶֽךָּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'el-hashsּata֗n hinּe֤h kal-'ashsher-lo֙ bּeyade֔ka ra֣q 'ela֔yv 'al-tּishshela֖ch yade֑ka vayּetze'֙ hashsּata֔n me'i֖m pּene֥y yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to the adversary, "Very well, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then the adversary went out from the presence of the LORD.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֗ן הִנֵּ֤ה כָל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ֙ בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ רַ֣ק אֵלָ֔יו אַל־תִּשְׁלַ֖ח יָדֶ֑ךָ וַיֵּצֵא֙ הַשָּׂטָ֔ן מֵעִ֖ם פְּנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֖y hayּ֑om ubana֨yv ubenota֤yv 'oֽkeliym֙ veshshoti֣ym ya֔yin bּebe֖yt 'achiyhe֥m habּekֽor׃

Edified Edition (EDE)One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house,

וַיְהִ֖י הַיּ֑וֹם וּבָנָ֨יו וּבְנֹתָ֤יו אֹֽכְלִים֙ וְשֹׁתִ֣ים יַ֔יִן בְּבֵ֖ית אֲחִיהֶ֥ם הַבְּכֽוֹר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umale'a֛ke bּa֥ 'el-'iyּ֖ob vayּo'ma֑r habּaqar֙ hay֣u choֽreshsh֔ot veha'aton֖ot ro'֥ot 'al-yedeyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were ploughing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,"

וּמַלְאָ֛ךְ בָּ֥א אֶל־אִיּ֖וֹב וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הַבָּקָר֙ הָי֣וּ חֹֽרְשׁ֔וֹת וְהָאֲתֹנ֖וֹת רֹע֥וֹת עַל־יְדֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּipּo֤l shsheba'֙ vatּiqּache֔m ve'et-hanּe'ari֖ym hikּ֣u lepiy-cha֑reb vaֽ'imּa֨leta֧h raq-'ani֛y lebadּi֖y lehagּi֥yd laֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"and the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

וַתִּפֹּ֤ל שְׁבָא֙ וַתִּקָּחֵ֔ם וְאֶת־הַנְּעָרִ֖ים הִכּ֣וּ לְפִי־חָ֑רֶב וָֽאִמָּ֨לְטָ֧ה רַק־אֲנִ֛י לְבַדִּ֖י לְהַגִּ֥יד לָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ֣od ׀ ze֣h medabּe֗r vezeh֮ bּa֣ vayּo'mar֒ 'e֣shsh 'elohi֗ym naֽpelah֙ min-hashshּama֔yim vatּibe'a֥r bּatzּo֛'n ubanּe'ari֖ym vatּo'kele֑m va'imּa֨leta֧h raq-'ani֛y lebadּi֖y lehagּi֥yd laֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)While he was still speaking, another messenger arrived and said, "The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

ע֣וֹד ׀ זֶ֣ה מְדַבֵּ֗ר וְזֶה֮ בָּ֣א וַיֹּאמַר֒ אֵ֣שׁ אֱלֹהִ֗ים נָֽפְלָה֙ מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַתִּבְעַ֥ר בַּצֹּ֛אן וּבַנְּעָרִ֖ים וַתֹּאכְלֵ֑ם וָאִמָּ֨לְטָ֧ה רַק־אֲנִ֛י לְבַדִּ֖י לְהַגִּ֥יד לָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ֣od ׀ ze֣h medabּe֗r vezeh֮ bּa֣ vayּo'mar֒ kּashsedּi֞ym shsa֣mu ׀ shsheloshsha֣h ra'shshi֗ym vaֽyּipeshshet֤u 'al-hagּemalּiym֙ vayּiqּach֔um ve'et-hanּe'ari֖ym hikּ֣u lepiy-cha֑reb va'imּa֨leta֧h raq-'ani֛y lebadּi֖y lehagּi֥yd laֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face."

ע֣וֹד ׀ זֶ֣ה מְדַבֵּ֗ר וְזֶה֮ בָּ֣א וַיֹּאמַר֒ כַּשְׂדִּ֞ים שָׂ֣מוּ ׀ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה רָאשִׁ֗ים וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֤וּ עַל־הַגְּמַלִּים֙ וַיִּקָּח֔וּם וְאֶת־הַנְּעָרִ֖ים הִכּ֣וּ לְפִי־חָ֑רֶב וָאִמָּ֨לְטָ֧ה רַק־אֲנִ֛י לְבַדִּ֖י לְהַגִּ֥יד לָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֚d ze֣h medabּe֔r veze֖h bּa֣ vayּo'ma֑r bּane֨yka ubenote֤yka 'oֽkeliym֙ veshshoti֣ym ya֔yin bּebe֖yt 'achiyhe֥m habּekֽor׃

Edified Edition (EDE)While he was still speaking, yet another messenger arrived and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house,"

עַ֚ד זֶ֣ה מְדַבֵּ֔ר וְזֶ֖ה בָּ֣א וַיֹּאמַ֑ר בָּנֶ֨יךָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֤יךָ אֹֽכְלִים֙ וְשֹׁתִ֣ים יַ֔יִן בְּבֵ֖ית אֲחִיהֶ֥ם הַבְּכֽוֹר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּeh֩ r֨ucha gּedola֜h bּa֣'ah ׀ me'e֣ber hamּidebּa֗r vayּigּa'֙ bּe'arebּa'֙ pּinּ֣ot habּa֔yit vayּipּo֥l 'al-hanּe'ari֖ym vayּam֑utu va'imּa֨leta֧h raq-'ani֛y lebadּi֖y lehagּi֥yd laֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Surely its life withers away, and from the soil other plants grow."

וְהִנֵּה֩ ר֨וּחַ גְּדוֹלָ֜ה בָּ֣אָה ׀ מֵעֵ֣בֶר הַמִּדְבָּ֗ר וַיִּגַּע֙ בְּאַרְבַּע֙ פִּנּ֣וֹת הַבַּ֔יִת וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־הַנְּעָרִ֖ים וַיָּמ֑וּתוּ וָאִמָּ֨לְטָ֧ה רַק־אֲנִ֛י לְבַדִּ֖י לְהַגִּ֥יד לָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤qam 'iyּob֙ vayּiqera֣ 'et-me'il֔o vayּa֖gaz 'et-ro'shsh֑o vayּipּo֥l 'a֖retzah vayּishshetּaֽchu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship

וַיָּ֤קָם אִיּוֹב֙ וַיִּקְרַ֣ע אֶת־מְעִל֔וֹ וַיָּ֖גָז אֶת־רֹאשׁ֑וֹ וַיִּפֹּ֥ל אַ֖רְצָה וַיִּשְׁתָּֽחוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֩ 'aro֨m ytzty yatza֜'tiy mibּe֣ten 'imּi֗y ve'arom֙ 'ashsh֣ub shsha֔mah yehva֣h nata֔n vayhva֖h laqa֑ch yehi֛y shshe֥m yehva֖h meboraֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and said: "Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave [1], and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ עָרֹ֨ם יצתי יָצָ֜אתִי מִבֶּ֣טֶן אִמִּ֗י וְעָרֹם֙ אָשׁ֣וּב שָׁ֔מָה יְהוָ֣ה נָתַ֔ן וַיהוָ֖ה לָקָ֑ח יְהִ֛י שֵׁ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה מְבֹרָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּekal-zo֖'t lo'-chata֣ 'iyּ֑ob velo'-nata֥n tּipela֖h le'lohiֽym׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

בְּכָל־זֹ֖את לֹא־חָטָ֣א אִיּ֑וֹב וְלֹא־נָתַ֥ן תִּפְלָ֖ה לֵאלֹהִֽים׃פ
