Chapter 1

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּishshena֣t shshal֔oshsh lemalek֖ut yehoyaqi֣ym meֽleke-yehuda֑h bּa֣ nebukadene'tzּa֧r meֽleke-bּabe֛l yerushshala֖im vayּa֥tzar 'aleֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it.

בִּשְׁנַ֣ת שָׁל֔וֹשׁ לְמַלְכ֖וּת יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָ֑ה בָּ֣א נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֧ר מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֛ל יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וַיָּ֥צַר עָלֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּen֩ 'adona֨y bּeyad֜o 'et-yehoyaqi֣ym meֽleke-yehuda֗h umiqetzat֙ kּele֣y beyt-haֽ'elohi֔ym vayebiy'e֥m 'eֽretz-shshine'a֖r bּe֣yt 'eloha֑yv ve'et-hakּeli֣ym hebi֔y bּe֖yt 'otza֥r 'elohaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to show the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.

וַיִּתֵּן֩ אֲדֹנָ֨י בְּיָד֜וֹ אֶת־יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָ֗ה וּמִקְצָת֙ כְּלֵ֣י בֵית־הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיְבִיאֵ֥ם אֶֽרֶץ־שִׁנְעָ֖ר בֵּ֣ית אֱלֹהָ֑יו וְאֶת־הַכֵּלִ֣ים הֵבִ֔יא בֵּ֖ית אוֹצַ֥ר אֱלֹהָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer hamּe֔leke le'ashshepּena֖z ra֣b sariysa֑yv lehabi֞y mibּene֧y yishsera'e֛l umizּe֥ra hamּeluka֖h umin-haֽpּaretּemiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לְאַשְׁפְּנַ֖ז רַ֣ב סָרִיסָ֑יו לְהָבִ֞יא מִבְּנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וּמִזֶּ֥רַע הַמְּלוּכָ֖ה וּמִן־הַֽפַּרְתְּמִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yeladi֣ym 'ashshe֣r 'eֽyn-bּahe֣m kּal-m'vm mum֩ vetobe֨y mare'e֜h umashsekּiyli֣ym bּekal-chakema֗h veyo֤de'ey da֨'at֙ umebiyne֣y madּa֔ va'ashsher֙ kּo֣cha bּahe֔m la'amo֖d bּeheyka֣l hamּe֑leke uֽlalamּeda֥m se֖per uleshsh֥on kּashsedּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Children in whom was no blemish, but well-favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

יְלָדִ֣ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֵֽין־בָּהֶ֣ם כָּל־מאום מוּם֩ וְטוֹבֵ֨י מַרְאֶ֜ה וּמַשְׂכִּילִ֣ים בְּכָל־חָכְמָ֗ה וְיֹ֤דְעֵי דַ֨עַת֙ וּמְבִינֵ֣י מַדָּ֔ע וַאֲשֶׁר֙ כֹּ֣חַ בָּהֶ֔ם לַעֲמֹ֖ד בְּהֵיכַ֣ל הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וּֽלֲלַמְּדָ֥ם סֵ֖פֶר וּלְשׁ֥וֹן כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayeman֩ lahe֨m hamּe֜leke dּebar-y֣om bּeyom֗o mipּat-bּa֤g hamּe֨leke֙ umiyּe֣yn mishshetּa֔yv uֽlegadּela֖m shshani֣ym shshal֑oshsh umi֨qetzata֔m yaֽ'amed֖u lipene֥y hamּeֽleke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

וַיְמַן֩ לָהֶ֨ם הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ דְּבַר־י֣וֹם בְּיוֹמ֗וֹ מִפַּת־בַּ֤ג הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ וּמִיֵּ֣ין מִשְׁתָּ֔יו וּֽלְגַדְּלָ֖ם שָׁנִ֣ים שָׁל֑וֹשׁ וּמִ֨קְצָתָ֔ם יַֽעַמְד֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y bahe֖m mibּene֣y yehuda֑h dּaniyּe֣'l chananeya֔h miֽyshsha'e֖l va'azareyaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

וַיְהִ֥י בָהֶ֖ם מִבְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה דָּנִיֵּ֣אל חֲנַנְיָ֔ה מִֽישָׁאֵ֖ל וַעֲזַרְיָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧shsem lahe֛m shsa֥r hasּariysi֖ym shshem֑ot vayּa֨shsem ledaֽniyּe֜'l bּe֣leteshsha'tzּa֗r velaֽchananeyah֙ shshadera֔ke ulemiֽyshsha'e֣l meyshsha֔ke vela'azareya֖h 'abe֥d negֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)To whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave to Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

וַיָּ֧שֶׂם לָהֶ֛ם שַׂ֥ר הַסָּרִיסִ֖ים שֵׁמ֑וֹת וַיָּ֨שֶׂם לְדָֽנִיֵּ֜אל בֵּ֣לְטְשַׁאצַּ֗ר וְלַֽחֲנַנְיָה֙ שַׁדְרַ֔ךְ וּלְמִֽישָׁאֵ֣ל מֵישַׁ֔ךְ וְלַעֲזַרְיָ֖ה עֲבֵ֥ד נְגֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤shsem dּaniyּe'l֙ 'al-libּ֔o 'ashshe֧r loֽ'-yitegּa'a֛l bּepatebּa֥g hamּe֖leke ubeye֣yn mishshetּa֑yv vayebaqּeshsh֙ mishsּa֣r hasּariysi֔ym 'ashshe֖r lo֥ yitegּa'aֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

וַיָּ֤שֶׂם דָּנִיֵּאל֙ עַל־לִבּ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֧ר לֹֽא־יִתְגָּאַ֛ל בְּפַתְבַּ֥ג הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ וּבְיֵ֣ין מִשְׁתָּ֑יו וַיְבַקֵּשׁ֙ מִשַּׂ֣ר הַסָּרִיסִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֥א יִתְגָּאָֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּe֤n haֽ'elohiym֙ 'et-dּa֣niyּe֔'l leche֖sed uֽlerachami֑ym lipene֖y shsa֥r hasּariysiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

וַיִּתֵּ֤ן הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־דָּ֣נִיֵּ֔אל לְחֶ֖סֶד וּֽלְרַחֲמִ֑ים לִפְנֵ֖י שַׂ֥ר הַסָּרִיסִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֜'mer shsa֤r hasּariysiym֙ leda֣niyּe֔'l yare֤ 'aniy֙ 'et-'adoni֣y hamּe֔leke 'ashshe֣r minּa֔h 'et-ma'akaleke֖m ve'et-mishshetּeyke֑m 'ashshe֡r lamּah֩ yire'e֨h 'et-pּeneyke֜m zoֽ'api֗ym min-hayeladiym֙ 'ashshe֣r kּegiֽyleke֔m vechiyּabetּe֥m 'et-ro'shshi֖y lamּeֽleke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, "I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall you make me endanger my head to the king."

וַיֹּ֜אמֶר שַׂ֤ר הַסָּרִיסִים֙ לְדָ֣נִיֵּ֔אל יָרֵ֤א אֲנִי֙ אֶת־אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מִנָּ֔ה אֶת־מַאֲכַלְכֶ֖ם וְאֶת־מִשְׁתֵּיכֶ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֡ר לָמָּה֩ יִרְאֶ֨ה אֶת־פְּנֵיכֶ֜ם זֹֽעֲפִ֗ים מִן־הַיְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר כְּגִֽילְכֶ֔ם וְחִיַּבְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־רֹאשִׁ֖י לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer dּaniyּe֖'l 'el-hamּeletza֑r 'ashshe֤r minּah֙ shsa֣r hasּaֽriysi֔ym 'al-dּaniyּe֣'l chananeya֔h miֽyshsha'e֖l va'azareyaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר דָּנִיֵּ֖אל אֶל־הַמֶּלְצַ֑ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר מִנָּה֙ שַׂ֣ר הַסָּֽרִיסִ֔ים עַל־דָּנִיֵּ֣אל חֲנַנְיָ֔ה מִֽישָׁאֵ֖ל וַעֲזַרְיָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): nas-na֥ 'et-'abade֖yka yami֣ym 'ashsara֑h veyitּenu-la֜nu min-hazּero'i֛ym veno'kela֖h uma֥yim venishshetּeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Prove your servants, I beseech you, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink."

נַס־נָ֥א אֶת־עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ יָמִ֣ים עֲשָׂרָ֑ה וְיִתְּנוּ־לָ֜נוּ מִן־הַזֵּרֹעִ֛ים וְנֹאכְלָ֖ה וּמַ֥יִם וְנִשְׁתֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyera'֤u lepane֨yka֙ mare'e֔ynu umare'eh֙ hayeladi֔ym ha'o֣keli֔ym 'e֖t pּatebּa֣g hamּe֑leke veka'ashshe֣r tּire'e֔h 'ashse֖h 'im-'abadeֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Then let our countenances be looked upon before you, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as you seest, deal with your servants."

וְיֵרָא֤וּ לְפָנֶ֨יךָ֙ מַרְאֵ֔ינוּ וּמַרְאֵה֙ הַיְלָדִ֔ים הָאֹ֣כְלִ֔ים אֵ֖ת פַּתְבַּ֣ג הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּרְאֵ֔ה עֲשֵׂ֖ה עִם־עֲבָדֶֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֥ lahe֖m ladּaba֣r hazּe֑h vayenasּe֖m yami֥ym 'ashsaraֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע לָהֶ֖ם לַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַיְנַסֵּ֖ם יָמִ֥ים עֲשָׂרָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umiqetzat֙ yami֣ym 'ashsara֔h nire'a֤h mare'eyhem֙ t֔ob uberiy'e֖y bּashsa֑r min-kּal-hayeladi֔ym ha'o֣keli֔ym 'e֖t pּatebּa֥g hamּeֽleke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

וּמִקְצָת֙ יָמִ֣ים עֲשָׂרָ֔ה נִרְאָ֤ה מַרְאֵיהֶם֙ ט֔וֹב וּבְרִיאֵ֖י בָּשָׂ֑ר מִן־כָּל־הַיְלָדִ֔ים הָאֹ֣כְלִ֔ים אֵ֖ת פַּתְבַּ֥ג הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y hamּeletza֗r noshse'֙ 'et-pּatebּaga֔m veye֖yn mishshetּeyhe֑m venote֥n lahe֖m zere'oniֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

וַיְהִ֣י הַמֶּלְצַ֗ר נֹשֵׂא֙ אֶת־פַּתְבָּגָ֔ם וְיֵ֖ין מִשְׁתֵּיהֶ֑ם וְנֹתֵ֥ן לָהֶ֖ם זֵרְעֹנִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayeladi֤ym ha'e֨lּeh֙ 'arebּa'etּa֔m nata֨n lahe֧m haֽ'elohi֛ym madּa֥ vehashsekּe֖l bּekal-se֣per vechakema֑h vedaniyּe֣'l hebi֔yn bּekal-chaz֖on vachalomֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

וְהַיְלָדִ֤ים הָאֵ֨לֶּה֙ אַרְבַּעְתָּ֔ם נָתַ֨ן לָהֶ֧ם הָֽאֱלֹהִ֛ים מַדָּ֥ע וְהַשְׂכֵּ֖ל בְּכָל־סֵ֣פֶר וְחָכְמָ֑ה וְדָנִיֵּ֣אל הֵבִ֔ין בְּכָל־חָז֖וֹן וַחֲלֹמֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ulemiqetzat֙ hayּami֔ym 'ashsher-'ama֥r hamּe֖leke lahabiy'a֑m vayebiy'em֙ shsa֣r hasּariysi֔ym lipene֖y nebukadenetzּaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

וּלְמִקְצָת֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־אָמַ֥ר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לַהֲבִיאָ֑ם וַיְבִיאֵם֙ שַׂ֣ר הַסָּרִיסִ֔ים לִפְנֵ֖י נְבֻכַדְנֶצַּֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֣r 'itּam֮ hamּeleke֒ velo֤ nimetza'֙ mikּulּa֔m kּedaniyּe֣'l chananeya֔h miֽyshsha'e֖l va'azareya֑h vayּaֽ'amed֖u lipene֥y hamּeֽleke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אִתָּם֮ הַמֶּלֶךְ֒ וְלֹ֤א נִמְצָא֙ מִכֻּלָּ֔ם כְּדָנִיֵּ֣אל חֲנַנְיָ֔ה מִֽישָׁאֵ֖ל וַעֲזַרְיָ֑ה וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veko֗l dּebar֙ chakema֣t bּiyna֔h 'ashsher-bּiqּe֥shsh mehe֖m hamּe֑leke vaֽyּimetza'e֞m 'e֣shser yad֗ot 'a֤l kּal-haֽcharetumּiym֙ haֽ'ashshּapi֔ym 'ashshe֖r bּekal-malekutֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

וְכֹ֗ל דְּבַר֙ חָכְמַ֣ת בִּינָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־בִּקֵּ֥שׁ מֵהֶ֖ם הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַֽיִּמְצָאֵ֞ם עֶ֣שֶׂר יָד֗וֹת עַ֤ל כָּל־הַֽחַרְטֻמִּים֙ הָֽאַשָּׁפִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּכָל־מַלְכוּתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ dּaֽniyּe֔'l 'ad-shshena֥t 'acha֖t lek֥oreshsh hamּeֽleke׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)And Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.

וַֽיְהִי֙ דָּֽנִיֵּ֔אל עַד־שְׁנַ֥ת אַחַ֖ת לְכ֥וֹרֶשׁ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃פ
