Chapter 1

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitechazּe֛q shshelomo֥h ben-dּavi֖yd 'al-malekut֑o vayhva֤h 'elohayv֙ 'imּ֔o vaֽyegadּele֖hu lemaֽ'elah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him [1] and magnified him exceedingly.

וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֛ק שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בֶן־דָּוִ֖יד עַל־מַלְכוּת֑וֹ וַיהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהָיו֙ עִמּ֔וֹ וַֽיְגַדְּלֵ֖הוּ לְמָֽעְלָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shshelomo֣h lekal-yishsera'e֡l leshsarey֩ ha'alapi֨ym vehamּe'֜ot velashshּoֽpeti֗ym uleko֛l nashsi֥y lekal-yishsera'e֖l ra'shshe֥y ha'abֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the father’s houses.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה לְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל לְשָׂרֵי֩ הָאֲלָפִ֨ים וְהַמֵּא֜וֹת וְלַשֹּֽׁפְטִ֗ים וּלְכֹ֛ל נָשִׂ֥יא לְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל רָאשֵׁ֥י הָאָבֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּelek֗u shshelomoh֙ vekal-haqּaha֣l 'imּ֔o labּama֖h 'ashshe֣r bּegibe'֑on kּiy-shsha֣m haya֗h 'o֤hel mo'ed֙ haֽ'elohi֔ym 'ashshe֥r 'ashsa֛h moshshe֥h 'eֽbed-yehva֖h bּamּidebּaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Solomon, and all the assembly with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for the tabernacle of meeting with God was there, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.

וַיֵּלְכ֗וּ שְׁלֹמֹה֙ וְכָל־הַקָּהָ֣ל עִמּ֔וֹ לַבָּמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּגִבְע֑וֹן כִּי־שָׁ֣ם הָיָ֗ה אֹ֤הֶל מוֹעֵד֙ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֛ה מֹשֶׁ֥ה עֶֽבֶד־יְהוָ֖ה בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): aba֗l 'ar֤on ha'elohiym֙ he'ela֤h daviyd֙ miqּireya֣t ye'ari֔ym bּaֽheki֥yn l֖o dּavi֑yd kּi֧y naֽtah-l֛o 'o֖hel bּiyrushshalaiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But David had brought up the ark of God from Kirjath Jearim to the place he had prepared for it, for he had pitched a tent for it at Jerusalem.

אֲבָ֗ל אֲר֤וֹן הָאֱלֹהִים֙ הֶעֱלָ֤ה דָוִיד֙ מִקִּרְיַ֣ת יְעָרִ֔ים בַּֽהֵכִ֥ין ל֖וֹ דָּוִ֑יד כִּ֧י נָֽטָה־ל֛וֹ אֹ֖הֶל בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umizebּa֣ch hanּecho֗shshet 'ashshe֤r 'ashsah֙ bּetzale'el֙ bּen-'uri֣y ben-ch֔ur shsa֕m lipene֖y mishshekּa֣n yehva֑h vayּidereshshe֥hu shshelomo֖h vehaqּahaֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover the bronze altar that Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put before the tabernacle of the LORD; Solomon and the assembly sought it out.

וּמִזְבַּ֣ח הַנְּחֹ֗שֶׁת אֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשָׂה֙ בְּצַלְאֵל֙ בֶּן־אוּרִ֣י בֶן־ח֔וּר שָׂ֕ם לִפְנֵ֖י מִשְׁכַּ֣ן יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּדְרְשֵׁ֥הוּ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה וְהַקָּהָֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'al֩ shshelomo֨h shsha֜m 'al-mizebּa֤ch hanּecho֨shshet֙ lipene֣y yehva֔h 'ashshe֖r le'o֣hel mo'e֑d vayּa֧'al 'ala֛yv 'ol֖ot 'aֽlep׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before the LORD, which was at the tabernacle of meeting, and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

וַיַּעַל֩ שְׁלֹמֹ֨ה שָׁ֜ם עַל־מִזְבַּ֤ח הַנְּחֹ֨שֶׁת֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר לְאֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וַיַּ֧עַל עָלָ֛יו עֹל֖וֹת אָֽלֶף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּalּa֣yelah hah֔u nire'a֥h 'elohi֖ym lishshelomo֑h vayּo֣'mer l֔o shshe'a֖l ma֥h 'etּen-laֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)That night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, "Ask! What shall I give you?"

בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֔וּא נִרְאָ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים לִשְׁלֹמֹ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ שְׁאַ֖ל מָ֥ה אֶתֶּן־לָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer shshelomoh֙ leֽ'lohi֔ym 'atּa֗h 'ashsi֛yta 'im-dּavi֥yd 'abi֖y che֣sed gּad֑ol vehimelaketּa֖niy tּachetּaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And Solomon said to God: "You have shown great mercy to David my father, and have made me king in his place.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁלֹמֹה֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים אַתָּ֗ה עָשִׂ֛יתָ עִם־דָּוִ֥יד אָבִ֖י חֶ֣סֶד גָּד֑וֹל וְהִמְלַכְתַּ֖נִי תַּחְתָּֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): atּah֙ yehva֣h 'elohi֔ym yeֽ'amen֙ dּeba֣reka֔ 'i֖m dּavi֣yd 'abi֑y kּi֤y 'atּah֙ himelaketּa֔niy 'al-'a֕m ra֖b kּa'apa֥r ha'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now, O LORD God, let Your promise to David my father be established, for You have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.

עַתָּה֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֔ים יֵֽאָמֵן֙ דְּבָ֣רְךָ֔ עִ֖ם דָּוִ֣יד אָבִ֑י כִּ֤י אַתָּה֙ הִמְלַכְתַּ֔נִי עַל־עַ֕ם רַ֖ב כַּעֲפַ֥ר הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): atּa֗h chakema֤h umadּa'֙ tּen-li֔y ve'eֽtze'a֛h lipene֥y haֽ'am-hazּe֖h ve'ab֑o'ah kּiֽy-mi֣y yishshepּo֔t 'et-'amּeka֥ hazּe֖h hagּadֽol׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?"

עַתָּ֗ה חָכְמָ֤ה וּמַדָּע֙ תֶּן־לִ֔י וְאֵֽצְאָ֛ה לִפְנֵ֥י הָֽעָם־הַזֶּ֖ה וְאָב֑וֹאָה כִּֽי־מִ֣י יִשְׁפֹּ֔ט אֶת־עַמְּךָ֥ הַזֶּ֖ה הַגָּדֽוֹל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer-'elohi֣ym ׀ lishshelomo֡h ya֣'an 'ashsher֩ hayeta֨h zo֜'t 'im-lebabe֗ka veloֽ'-shsha֠'aletּa 'o֣shsher nekasi֤ym vekabod֙ ve'et֙ ne֣peshsh shsone'e֔yka vegam-yami֥ym rabּi֖ym lo֣ shsha'a֑letּa vatּiֽshshe'al-leka֙ chakema֣h umadּa֔ 'ashshe֤r tּishshepּot֙ 'et-'amּi֔y 'ashshe֥r himelaketּi֖yka 'alaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then God said to Solomon: "Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for riches or wealth or honour or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king,

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר־אֱלֹהִ֣ים ׀ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֡ה יַ֣עַן אֲשֶׁר֩ הָיְתָ֨ה זֹ֜את עִם־לְבָבֶ֗ךָ וְלֹֽא־שָׁ֠אַלְתָּ עֹ֣שֶׁר נְכָסִ֤ים וְכָבוֹד֙ וְאֵת֙ נֶ֣פֶשׁ שֹׂנְאֶ֔יךָ וְגַם־יָמִ֥ים רַבִּ֖ים לֹ֣א שָׁאָ֑לְתָּ וַתִּֽשְׁאַל־לְךָ֙ חָכְמָ֣ה וּמַדָּ֔ע אֲשֶׁ֤ר תִּשְׁפּוֹט֙ אֶת־עַמִּ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִמְלַכְתִּ֖יךָ עָלָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): haֽchakema֥h vehamּadּa֖ nat֣un la֑ke ve'o֨shsher unekasi֤ym vekabod֙ 'etּen-la֔ke 'ashshe֣r ׀ lo'-ha֣yah ke֗n lamּelakiym֙ 'ashshe֣r lepane֔yka ve'achare֖yka lo֥ yiֽheyeh-kּeֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honour, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like."

הַֽחָכְמָ֥ה וְהַמַּדָּ֖ע נָת֣וּן לָ֑ךְ וְעֹ֨שֶׁר וּנְכָסִ֤ים וְכָבוֹד֙ אֶתֶּן־לָ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֣ר ׀ לֹא־הָ֣יָה כֵ֗ן לַמְּלָכִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְאַחֲרֶ֖יךָ לֹ֥א יִֽהְיֶה־כֵּֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨ shshelomo֜h labּama֤h 'ashsher-bּegibe'on֙ yer֣ushshalai֔m milּipene֖y 'o֣hel mo'e֑d vayּimelo֖ke 'al-yishsera'eֽl׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)So Solomon came to Jerusalem from the high place that was at Gibeon, from before the tabernacle of meeting, and reigned over Israel.

וַיָּבֹ֨א שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה לַבָּמָ֤ה אֲשֶׁר־בְּגִבְעוֹן֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם מִלִּפְנֵ֖י אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וַיִּמְלֹ֖ךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe'eso֣p shshelomoh֮ re֣keb uparashshiym֒ vaֽyehiy-l֗o 'e֤lep ve'arebּa'-me'ot֙ re֔keb ushsheneym-'ashsa֥r 'e֖lep pּarashshi֑ym vayּanּiychem֙ bּe'are֣y hare֔keb ve'im-hamּe֖leke bּiyrֽushshalaiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen; he had one thousand four hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he stationed in the chariot cities and with the king at Jerusalem.

וַיֶּאֱסֹ֣ף שְׁלֹמֹה֮ רֶ֣כֶב וּפָרָשִׁים֒ וַֽיְהִי־ל֗וֹ אֶ֤לֶף וְאַרְבַּע־מֵאוֹת֙ רֶ֔כֶב וּשְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶף פָּרָשִׁ֑ים וַיַּנִּיחֵם֙ בְּעָרֵ֣י הָרֶ֔כֶב וְעִם־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּe֨n hamּe֜leke 'et-hakּe֧sep ve'et-hazּaha֛b bּiyrushshala֖im kּa'abani֑ym ve'e֣t ha'arazi֗ym nata֛n kּashshּiqemi֥ym 'ashsher-bּashshּepela֖h laroֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedar trees as abundant as the sycamores which are in the lowlands.

וַיִּתֵּ֨ן הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־הַכֶּ֧סֶף וְאֶת־הַזָּהָ֛ב בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם כָּאֲבָנִ֑ים וְאֵ֣ת הָאֲרָזִ֗ים נָתַ֛ן כַּשִּׁקְמִ֥ים אֲשֶׁר־בַּשְּׁפֵלָ֖ה לָרֹֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umotza֧ hasּusi֛ym 'ashshe֥r lishshelomo֖h mimּitzera֑yim umiqeve֕ sochare֣y hamּe֔leke miqeve֥ yiqech֖u bּimechiֽyr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Also Solomon had horses imported from Egypt and Keveh; the king’s merchants bought them in Keveh at the current price.

וּמוֹצָ֧א הַסּוּסִ֛ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לִשְׁלֹמֹ֖ה מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וּמִקְוֵ֕א סֹחֲרֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ מִקְוֵ֥א יִקְח֖וּ בִּמְחִֽיר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽ֠yּa'alu vayּotzi֨y'u mimּitzera֤yim merekּabah֙ bּeshshe֣shsh me'֣ot kּe֔sep ves֖us bּachamishshּi֣ym ume'a֑h ve֠ken lekal-maleke֧y haֽchitּi֛ym umaleke֥y 'ara֖m bּeyada֥m yotziֽy'u׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They also brought out of Egypt a chariot for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for one hundred and fifty; and so they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Syria.

וַֽ֠יַּעֲלוּ וַיּוֹצִ֨יאוּ מִמִּצְרַ֤יִם מֶרְכָּבָה֙ בְּשֵׁ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת כֶּ֔סֶף וְס֖וּס בַּחֲמִשִּׁ֣ים וּמֵאָ֑ה וְ֠כֵן לְכָל־מַלְכֵ֧י הַֽחִתִּ֛ים וּמַלְכֵ֥י אֲרָ֖ם בְּיָדָ֥ם יוֹצִֽיאוּ׃

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה לִבְנ֥וֹת בַּ֨יִת֙ לְשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה וּבַ֖יִת לְמַלְכוּתֽוֹ׃
