Chapter 1

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֩ 'i֨yshsh 'echa֜d min-haramata֛yim tzopi֖ym meha֣r 'epera֑yim ushshem֡o 'e֠leqanah bּen-yerocha֧m bּen-'eliyh֛u bּen-tּo֥chu ben-tz֖up 'eperatiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There was a certain man named Elkanah, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham and grandson of Elihu.

וַיְהִי֩ אִ֨ישׁ אֶחָ֜ד מִן־הָרָמָתַ֛יִם צוֹפִ֖ים מֵהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וּשְׁמ֡וֹ אֶ֠לְקָנָה בֶּן־יְרֹחָ֧ם בֶּן־אֱלִיה֛וּא בֶּן־תֹּ֥חוּ בֶן־צ֖וּף אֶפְרָתִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֙ shshetּe֣y nashshi֔ym shshe֤m 'achat֙ chanּa֔h veshshe֥m hashshּeni֖yt pּeninּa֑h vayehi֤y lipeninּah֙ yeladi֔ym ulechanּa֖h 'e֥yn yeladiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He had two wives; one was Hannah and the other was Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

וְלוֹ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֔ים שֵׁ֤ם אַחַת֙ חַנָּ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פְּנִנָּ֑ה וַיְהִ֤י לִפְנִנָּה֙ יְלָדִ֔ים וּלְחַנָּ֖ה אֵ֥ין יְלָדִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'alah֩ ha'i֨yshsh hah֤u meֽ'iyro֙ miyּami֣ym ׀ yami֔ymah lehiֽshshetּachavo֧t velizebּo֛cha layhva֥h tzeba'֖ot bּeshshilo֑h veshsha֞m shshene֣y beneֽy-'eli֗y chapeniy֙ upi֣necha֔s kּohani֖ym layhvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Armies [1] at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD.

וְעָלָה֩ הָאִ֨ישׁ הַה֤וּא מֵֽעִירוֹ֙ מִיָּמִ֣ים ׀ יָמִ֔ימָה לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֧ת וְלִזְבֹּ֛חַ לַיהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת בְּשִׁלֹ֑ה וְשָׁ֞ם שְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־עֵלִ֗י חָפְנִי֙ וּפִ֣נְחָ֔ס כֹּהֲנִ֖ים לַיהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y hayּ֔om vayּizebּa֖ch 'eleqana֑h venata֞n lipeninּa֣h 'ishshetּ֗o uֽlekal-bּane֛yha ubenote֖yha manֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.

וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח אֶלְקָנָ֑ה וְנָתַ֞ן לִפְנִנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וּֽלְכָל־בָּנֶ֛יהָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ מָנֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ulechanּa֕h yitּe֛n mana֥h 'acha֖t 'apּa֑yim kּi֤y 'et-chanּah֙ 'ahe֔b vaֽyhva֖h saga֥r rachemaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had kept her from having children.

וּלְחַנָּ֕ה יִתֵּ֛ן מָנָ֥ה אַחַ֖ת אַפָּ֑יִם כִּ֤י אֶת־חַנָּה֙ אָהֵ֔ב וַֽיהוָ֖ה סָגַ֥ר רַחְמָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekiֽ'asa֤tּah tzaֽratahּ֙ gּam-kּa֔'as bּa'ab֖ur harּe'ima֑hּ kּiֽy-saga֥r yehva֖h bּe'a֥d rachemaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Because the LORD had kept her from having children, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.

וְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּה צָֽרָתָהּ֙ גַּם־כַּ֔עַס בַּעֲב֖וּר הַרְּעִמָ֑הּ כִּֽי־סָגַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה בְּעַ֥ד רַחְמָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veke֨n ya'ashse֜h shshana֣h beshshana֗h midּe֤y 'alotahּ֙ bּebe֣yt yehva֔h kּe֖n tּake'ise֑nּah vatּibekּe֖h velo֥ to'kaֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.

וְכֵ֨ן יַעֲשֶׂ֜ה שָׁנָ֣ה בְשָׁנָ֗ה מִדֵּ֤י עֲלֹתָהּ֙ בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה כֵּ֖ן תַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּה וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תֹאכַֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer la֜hּ 'eleqana֣h 'iyshsha֗hּ chanּah֙ la֣meh tibekּi֗y vela֨meh֙ lo֣ toֽ'keli֔y vela֖meh yera֣ lebabe֑ke hal֤o 'aֽnokiy֙ t֣ob la֔ke me'ashsara֖h bּaniֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Her husband Elkanah would say to her, "Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?"

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לָ֜הּ אֶלְקָנָ֣ה אִישָׁ֗הּ חַנָּה֙ לָ֣מֶה תִבְכִּ֗י וְלָ֨מֶה֙ לֹ֣א תֹֽאכְלִ֔י וְלָ֖מֶה יֵרַ֣ע לְבָבֵ֑ךְ הֲל֤וֹא אָֽנֹכִי֙ ט֣וֹב לָ֔ךְ מֵעֲשָׂרָ֖ה בָּנִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֣qam chanּa֔h 'achare֛y 'akela֥h beshshilo֖h ve'achare֣y shshato֑h ve'eli֣y hakּohe֗n yoshsheb֙ 'al-hakּisּe֔ 'al-mezuza֖t heyka֥l yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the LORD’s sanctuary.

וַתָּ֣קָם חַנָּ֔ה אַחֲרֵ֛י אָכְלָ֥ה בְשִׁלֹ֖ה וְאַחֲרֵ֣י שָׁתֹ֑ה וְעֵלִ֣י הַכֹּהֵ֗ן יֹשֵׁב֙ עַל־הַכִּסֵּ֔א עַל־מְזוּזַ֖ת הֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehi֖y ma֣rat na֑peshsh vatּitepּalּe֥l 'al-yehva֖h ubako֥h tibekּeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.

וְהִ֖יא מָ֣רַת נָ֑פֶשׁ וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל עַל־יְהוָ֖ה וּבָכֹ֥ה תִבְכֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּidּo֨r ne֜der vatּo'ma֗r yehva֨h tzeba'֜ot 'im-ra'o֥h tire'e֣h ׀ bּa'oni֣y 'amate֗ka uzekaretּa֨niy֙ veloֽ'-tishshekּa֣ch 'et-'amate֔ka venatatּa֥h la'amateka֖ ze֣ra 'anashshi֑ym unetatּi֤yv laֽyhvah֙ kּal-yeme֣y chayּa֔yv umora֖h lo'-ya'ale֥h 'al-ro'shshֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And she made a vow, saying, "The LORD of Armies, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."

וַתִּדֹּ֨ר נֶ֜דֶר וַתֹּאמַ֗ר יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אִם־רָאֹ֥ה תִרְאֶ֣ה ׀ בָּעֳנִ֣י אֲמָתֶ֗ךָ וּזְכַרְתַּ֨נִי֙ וְלֹֽא־תִשְׁכַּ֣ח אֶת־אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ וְנָתַתָּ֥ה לַאֲמָתְךָ֖ זֶ֣רַע אֲנָשִׁ֑ים וּנְתַתִּ֤יו לַֽיהוָה֙ כָּל־יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֔יו וּמוֹרָ֖ה לֹא־יַעֲלֶ֥ה עַל־רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayah֙ kּi֣y hirebּeta֔h lehitepּalּe֖l lipene֣y yehva֑h ve'eli֖y shshome֥r 'et-pּiֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.

וְהָיָה֙ כִּ֣י הִרְבְּתָ֔ה לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְעֵלִ֖י שֹׁמֵ֥ר אֶת־פִּֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vechanּa֗h hi֚y medabּe֣ret 'al-libּa֔hּ ra֚q shsepate֣yha nּa'֔ot veqola֖hּ lo֣ yishshּame֑'a vayּacheshshebe֥ha 'eli֖y leshshikּoraֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk

וְחַנָּ֗ה הִ֚יא מְדַבֶּ֣רֶת עַל־לִבָּ֔הּ רַ֚ק שְׂפָתֶ֣יהָ נָּע֔וֹת וְקוֹלָ֖הּ לֹ֣א יִשָּׁמֵ֑עַ וַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָ עֵלִ֖י לְשִׁכֹּרָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'ele֨yha֙ 'eli֔y 'ad-mata֖y tּishshetּakּari֑yn hasi֥yriy 'et-yeyne֖ke me'alaֽyike׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and said to her, "How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלֶ֨יהָ֙ עֵלִ֔י עַד־מָתַ֖י תִּשְׁתַּכָּרִ֑ין הָסִ֥ירִי אֶת־יֵינֵ֖ךְ מֵעָלָֽיִךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֨'an chanּa֤h vatּo֨'mer֙ lo֣ 'adoni֔y 'ishshּa֤h qeshshat-r֨ucha֙ 'ano֔kiy veya֥yin veshsheka֖r lo֣ shshati֑ytiy va'eshshepּo֥ke 'et-napeshshi֖y lipene֥y yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Not so, my lord," Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD.

וַתַּ֨עַן חַנָּ֤ה וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א אֲדֹנִ֔י אִשָּׁ֤ה קְשַׁת־ר֨וּחַ֙ אָנֹ֔כִי וְיַ֥יִן וְשֵׁכָ֖ר לֹ֣א שָׁתִ֑יתִי וָאֶשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֖י לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּitּen֙ 'et-'ama֣teka֔ lipene֖y bּat-bּeliyּa֑'al kּiֽy-mero֥b shsiychi֛y veka'esi֖y dּibּa֥retּiy 'ad-heֽnּah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief."

אַל־תִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ לִפְנֵ֖י בַּת־בְּלִיָּ֑עַל כִּֽי־מֵרֹ֥ב שִׂיחִ֛י וְכַעְסִ֖י דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי עַד־הֵֽנָּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧'an 'eli֛y vayּo֖'mer leki֣y leshshal֑om ve'lohe֣y yishsera'e֗l yitּen֙ 'et-shshe֣late֔ke 'ashshe֥r shsha'a֖letּe me'imּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Eli answered, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him."

וַיַּ֧עַן עֵלִ֛י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לְכִ֣י לְשָׁל֑וֹם וֵאלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל יִתֵּן֙ אֶת־שֵׁ֣לָתֵ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖לְתְּ מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֕'mer tּimetza֧ shshipechateka֛ che֖n bּe'eyne֑yka vatּe֨leke ha'ishshּa֤h ledarekּahּ֙ vatּo'ka֔l upane֥yha lo'-hayu-la֖hּ 'ֽod׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She said, "May your servant find favour in your eyes." Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר תִּמְצָ֧א שִׁפְחָתְךָ֛ חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וַתֵּ֨לֶךְ הָאִשָּׁ֤ה לְדַרְכָּהּ֙ וַתֹּאכַ֔ל וּפָנֶ֥יהָ לֹא־הָיוּ־לָ֖הּ עֽוֹד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּi֣mu babּo֗qer vayּiֽshshetּachavu֙ lipene֣y yehva֔h vayּashshu֛bu vayּabo֥'u 'el-bּeyta֖m harama֑tah vayּe֤da 'eleqanah֙ 'et-chanּa֣h 'ishshetּ֔o vayּֽizekּere֖ha yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Early the next morning they rose and worshipped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah had relations with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.

וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּ בַבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲווּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּשֻׁ֛בוּ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל־בֵּיתָ֖ם הָרָמָ֑תָה וַיֵּ֤דַע אֶלְקָנָה֙ אֶת־חַנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַיִּֽזְכְּרֶ֖הָ יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ litequp֣ot hayּami֔ym vatּa֥har chanּa֖h vatּe֣led bּe֑n vatּiqera֤ 'et-shshemo֙ shshemu'e֔l kּi֥y meyehva֖h shshe'iletּiֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel [2], saying, "Because I asked the LORD for him."

וַיְהִי֙ לִתְקֻפ֣וֹת הַיָּמִ֔ים וַתַּ֥הַר חַנָּ֖ה וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתִּקְרָ֤א אֶת־שְׁמוֹ֙ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל כִּ֥י מֵיְהוָ֖ה שְׁאִלְתִּֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֛'al ha'i֥yshsh 'eleqana֖h vekal-bּeyt֑o lizebּo֧cha laֽyhva֛h 'et-ze֥bach hayּami֖ym ve'et-niderֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfil his vow,

וַיַּ֛עַל הָאִ֥ישׁ אֶלְקָנָ֖ה וְכָל־בֵּית֑וֹ לִזְבֹּ֧חַ לַֽיהוָ֛ה אֶת־זֶ֥בַח הַיָּמִ֖ים וְאֶת־נִדְרֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vechanּa֖h lo֣ 'ala֑tah kּiֽy-'amera֣h le'iyshsha֗hּ 'a֣d yigּame֤l hanּa֨'ar֙ vahabi'oti֗yv venire'ah֙ 'et-pּene֣y yehva֔h veya֥shshab shsha֖m 'ad-'olaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, "After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the LORD, and he will live there always."

וְחַנָּ֖ה לֹ֣א עָלָ֑תָה כִּֽי־אָמְרָ֣ה לְאִישָׁ֗הּ עַ֣ד יִגָּמֵ֤ל הַנַּ֨עַר֙ וַהֲבִאֹתִ֗יו וְנִרְאָה֙ אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְיָ֥שַׁב שָׁ֖ם עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer lahּ֩ 'eleqana֨h 'iyshsha֜hּ 'ashsi֧y hatּ֣ob bּe'eyna֗yike shshebiy֙ 'ad-gּamele֣ke 'ot֔o 'a֛ke yaqe֥m yehva֖h 'et-dּebar֑o vatּe֤shsheb haֽ'ishshּah֙ vatּe֣yneq 'et-bּena֔hּ 'ad-gּamela֖hּ 'otֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Do what seems best to you," her husband Elkanah told her. "Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD make good his word." So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהּ֩ אֶלְקָנָ֨ה אִישָׁ֜הּ עֲשִׂ֧י הַטּ֣וֹב בְּעֵינַ֗יִךְ שְׁבִי֙ עַד־גָּמְלֵ֣ךְ אֹת֔וֹ אַ֛ךְ יָקֵ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־דְּבָר֑וֹ וַתֵּ֤שֶׁב הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ וַתֵּ֣ינֶק אֶת־בְּנָ֔הּ עַד־גָּמְלָ֖הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa'ale֨hu 'imּa֜hּ kּa'ashshe֣r gּemala֗tּu bּepari֤ym shsheloshshah֙ ve'eypa֨h 'acha֥t qe֨mach֙ vene֣bel ya֔yin vatּebi'e֥hu beyt-yehva֖h shshil֑o vehanּa֖'ar naֽ'ar׃

Edified Edition (EDE)After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.

וַתַּעֲלֵ֨הוּ עִמָּ֜הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר גְּמָלַ֗תּוּ בְּפָרִ֤ים שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ וְאֵיפָ֨ה אַחַ֥ת קֶ֨מַח֙ וְנֵ֣בֶל יַ֔יִן וַתְּבִאֵ֥הוּ בֵית־יְהוָ֖ה שִׁל֑וֹ וְהַנַּ֖עַר נָֽעַר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishshechat֖u 'et-hapּa֑r vayּabi֥y'u 'et-hanּa֖'ar 'el-'eliֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli,

וַֽיִּשְׁחֲט֖וּ אֶת־הַפָּ֑ר וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ אֶת־הַנַּ֖עַר אֶל־עֵלִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ bּi֣y 'adoni֔y che֥y napeshsheka֖ 'adoni֑y 'ani֣y ha'ishshּa֗h hanּitzּe֤bet 'imּekah֙ bּaze֔h lehitepּalּe֖l 'el-yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and she said to him, "Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י חֵ֥י נַפְשְׁךָ֖ אֲדֹנִ֑י אֲנִ֣י הָאִשָּׁ֗ה הַנִּצֶּ֤בֶת עִמְּכָה֙ בָּזֶ֔ה לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): el-hanּa֥'ar hazּe֖h hitepּalּa֑letּiy vayּitּe֨n yehva֥h liy֙ 'et-shshe'e֣lati֔y 'ashshe֥r shsha'a֖letּiy me'imּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.

אֶל־הַנַּ֥עַר הַזֶּ֖ה הִתְפַּלָּ֑לְתִּי וַיִּתֵּ֨ן יְהוָ֥ה לִי֙ אֶת־שְׁאֵ֣לָתִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖לְתִּי מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vega֣m 'anoki֗y hishshe'iletּi֨hu֙ laֽyhva֔h kּal-hayּamiym֙ 'ashshe֣r haya֔h h֥u shsha'֖ul laֽyhva֑h vayּishshetּa֥chu shsha֖m layhvaֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And they worshipped the LORD there.

וְגַ֣ם אָנֹכִ֗י הִשְׁאִלְתִּ֨הוּ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה כָּל־הַיָּמִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֔ה ה֥וּא שָׁא֖וּל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ שָׁ֖ם לַיהוָֽה׃פ
