Chapter 1

Edified Edition (EDE)Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

Παῦλος καὶ Τιμόθεος δοῦλοι ⸂Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ⸃ πᾶσιν τοῖς ἁγίοις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τοῖς οὖσιν ἐν Φιλίπποις σὺν ἐπισκόποις καὶ διακόνοις·

Phonetic (Greek): charis hymin kai eirene apo theoy patros hemon kai kyriou Ἰesoy Christoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): Eycharisto tῷ theῷ mou epi pasῃ tῇ mneiᾳ hymon

Edified Edition (EDE)I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

Εὐχαριστῶ τῷ θεῷ μου ἐπὶ πάσῃ τῇ μνείᾳ ὑμῶν

Phonetic (Greek): pantote en pasῃ deesei mou hyper panton hymon, meta charas ten deesin poioymenos,

Edified Edition (EDE)always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy,

πάντοτε ἐν πάσῃ δεήσει μου ὑπὲρ πάντων ὑμῶν, μετὰ χαρᾶς τὴν δέησιν ποιούμενος,

Phonetic (Greek): epi tῇ koinoniᾳ hymon eis to eyangelion apo ⸀tes protes hemeras achri toy nyn,

Edified Edition (EDE)for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now,

ἐπὶ τῇ κοινωνίᾳ ὑμῶν εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ἀπὸ ⸀τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν,

Phonetic (Greek): pepoithos ayto toyto hoti ho enarxamenos en hymin ergon agathon epitelesei achri hemeras ⸂Christoy Ἰesoy⸃·

Edified Edition (EDE)being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

πεποιθὼς αὐτὸ τοῦτο ὅτι ὁ ἐναρξάμενος ἐν ὑμῖν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἐπιτελέσει ἄχρι ἡμέρας ⸂Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ⸃·

Phonetic (Greek): kathos estin dikaion emoi toyto phronein hyper panton hymon, dia to echein me en tῇ kardiᾳ hymas, en te tois desmois mou kai en tῇ apologiᾳ kai bebaiosei toy eyangeliou synkoinonoys mou tes charitos pantas hymas ontas·

Edified Edition (EDE)just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace.

καθώς ἐστιν δίκαιον ἐμοὶ τοῦτο φρονεῖν ὑπὲρ πάντων ὑμῶν, διὰ τὸ ἔχειν με ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ ὑμᾶς, ἔν τε τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀπολογίᾳ καὶ βεβαιώσει τοῦ εὐαγγελίου συγκοινωνούς μου τῆς χάριτος πάντας ὑμᾶς ὄντας·

Phonetic (Greek): martys gar ⸀mou ho theos, hos epipotho pantas hymas en splanchnois ⸂Christoy Ἰesoy⸃.

Edified Edition (EDE)For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.

μάρτυς γάρ ⸀μου ὁ θεός, ὡς ἐπιποθῶ πάντας ὑμᾶς ἐν σπλάγχνοις ⸂Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ⸃.

Phonetic (Greek): kai toyto proseychomai hina he agape hymon eti mallon kai mallon perisseyῃ en epignosei kai pasῃ aisthesei,

Edified Edition (EDE)And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment,

καὶ τοῦτο προσεύχομαι ἵνα ἡ ἀγάπη ὑμῶν ἔτι μᾶλλον καὶ μᾶλλον περισσεύῃ ἐν ἐπιγνώσει καὶ πάσῃ αἰσθήσει,

Phonetic (Greek): eis to dokimazein hymas ta diapheronta, hina ete eilikrineis kai aproskopoi eis hemeran Christoy,

Edified Edition (EDE)that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ,

εἰς τὸ δοκιμάζειν ὑμᾶς τὰ διαφέροντα, ἵνα ἦτε εἰλικρινεῖς καὶ ἀπρόσκοποι εἰς ἡμέραν Χριστοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): pepleromenoi ⸂karpon dikaiosynes ton⸃ dia Ἰesoy Christoy eis doxan kai epainon theoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

πεπληρωμένοι ⸂καρπὸν δικαιοσύνης τὸν⸃ διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς δόξαν καὶ ἔπαινον θεοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): Ginoskein de hymas boylomai, adelphoi, hoti ta katʼ eme mallon eis prokopen toy eyangeliou elelythen,

Edified Edition (EDE)But I want you to know, brothers, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel,

Γινώσκειν δὲ ὑμᾶς βούλομαι, ἀδελφοί, ὅτι τὰ κατʼ ἐμὲ μᾶλλον εἰς προκοπὴν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου ἐλήλυθεν,

Phonetic (Greek): hoste toys desmoys mou phaneroys en Christῷ genesthai en holῳ tῷ praitoriῳ kai tois loipois pasin,

Edified Edition (EDE)so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ;

ὥστε τοὺς δεσμούς μου φανεροὺς ἐν Χριστῷ γενέσθαι ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ πραιτωρίῳ καὶ τοῖς λοιποῖς πᾶσιν,

Phonetic (Greek): kai toys pleionas ton adelphon en kyriῳ pepoithotas tois desmois mou perissoteros tolman aphobos ton ⸀logon lalein.

Edified Edition (EDE)and most of the brothers in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

καὶ τοὺς πλείονας τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἐν κυρίῳ πεποιθότας τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου περισσοτέρως τολμᾶν ἀφόβως τὸν ⸀λόγον λαλεῖν.

Phonetic (Greek): Tines men kai dia phthonon kai erin, tines de kai diʼ eydokian ton Christon keryssousin·

Edified Edition (EDE)Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill:

Τινὲς μὲν καὶ διὰ φθόνον καὶ ἔριν, τινὲς δὲ καὶ διʼ εὐδοκίαν τὸν Χριστὸν κηρύσσουσιν·

Phonetic (Greek): ohi men ex ⸂agapes, eidotes hoti eis apologian toy eyangeliou keimai⸃,

Edified Edition (EDE)The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains;

οἱ μὲν ἐξ ⸂ἀγάπης, εἰδότες ὅτι εἰς ἀπολογίαν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου κεῖμαι⸃,

Phonetic (Greek): ohi de ex ⸂eritheias ton Christon katangellousin, oych hagnos, oiomenoi thlipsin egeirein tois desmois mou⸃.

Edified Edition (EDE)but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defence of the gospel.

οἱ δὲ ἐξ ⸂ἐριθείας τὸν Χριστὸν καταγγέλλουσιν, οὐχ ἁγνῶς, οἰόμενοι θλῖψιν ἐγείρειν τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου⸃.

Phonetic (Greek): ti gar; plen ⸀hoti panti tropῳ, eite prophasei eite aletheiᾳ, Christos katangelletai, kai en toytῳ chairo· alla kai charesomai,

Edified Edition (EDE)What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.

τί γάρ; πλὴν ⸀ὅτι παντὶ τρόπῳ, εἴτε προφάσει εἴτε ἀληθείᾳ, Χριστὸς καταγγέλλεται, καὶ ἐν τούτῳ χαίρω· ἀλλὰ καὶ χαρήσομαι,

Phonetic (Greek): oida gar hoti toyto moi apobesetai eis soterian dia tes hymon deeseos kai epichoregias toy pneymatos Ἰesoy Christoy,

Edified Edition (EDE)For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι τοῦτό μοι ἀποβήσεται εἰς σωτηρίαν διὰ τῆς ὑμῶν δεήσεως καὶ ἐπιχορηγίας τοῦ πνεύματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): kata ten apokaradokian kai elpida mou hoti en oydeni aischynthesomai, allʼ en pasῃ parresiᾳ hos pantote kai nyn megalynthesetai Christos en tῷ somati mou, eite dia zoes eite dia thanatou.

Edified Edition (EDE)according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.

κατὰ τὴν ἀποκαραδοκίαν καὶ ἐλπίδα μου ὅτι ἐν οὐδενὶ αἰσχυνθήσομαι, ἀλλʼ ἐν πάσῃ παρρησίᾳ ὡς πάντοτε καὶ νῦν μεγαλυνθήσεται Χριστὸς ἐν τῷ σώματί μου, εἴτε διὰ ζωῆς εἴτε διὰ θανάτου.

Phonetic (Greek): emoi gar to zen Christos kai to apothanein kerdos.

Edified Edition (EDE)For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

ἐμοὶ γὰρ τὸ ζῆν Χριστὸς καὶ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν κέρδος.

Phonetic (Greek): ei de to zen en sarki, toyto moi karpos ergou— kai ti ahiresomai oy gnorizo·

Edified Edition (EDE)But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labour; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell.

εἰ δὲ τὸ ζῆν ἐν σαρκί, τοῦτό μοι καρπὸς ἔργου— καὶ τί αἱρήσομαι οὐ γνωρίζω·

Phonetic (Greek): synechomai de ek ton dyo, ten epithymian echon eis to analysai kai syn Christῷ einai, pollῷ ⸀gar mallon kreisson,

Edified Edition (EDE)For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

συνέχομαι δὲ ἐκ τῶν δύο, τὴν ἐπιθυμίαν ἔχων εἰς τὸ ἀναλῦσαι καὶ σὺν Χριστῷ εἶναι, πολλῷ ⸀γὰρ μᾶλλον κρεῖσσον,

Phonetic (Greek): to de epimenein ⸀en tῇ sarki anankaioteron diʼ hymas.

Edified Edition (EDE)Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you.

τὸ δὲ ἐπιμένειν ⸀ἐν τῇ σαρκὶ ἀναγκαιότερον διʼ ὑμᾶς.

Phonetic (Greek): kai toyto pepoithos oida hoti meno kai ⸀parameno pasin hymin eis ten hymon prokopen kai charan tes pisteos,

Edified Edition (EDE)And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith,

καὶ τοῦτο πεποιθὼς οἶδα ὅτι μενῶ καὶ ⸀παραμενῶ πᾶσιν ὑμῖν εἰς τὴν ὑμῶν προκοπὴν καὶ χαρὰν τῆς πίστεως,

Phonetic (Greek): hina to kaychema hymon perisseyῃ en Christῷ Ἰesoy en emoi dia tes emes parousias palin pros hymas.

Edified Edition (EDE)that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.

ἵνα τὸ καύχημα ὑμῶν περισσεύῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἐν ἐμοὶ διὰ τῆς ἐμῆς παρουσίας πάλιν πρὸς ὑμᾶς.

Phonetic (Greek): Monon axios toy eyangeliou toy Christoy politeyesthe, hina eite elthon kai idon hymas eite apon ⸀akoyo ta peri hymon, hoti stekete en heni pneymati, miᾷ psychῇ synathloyntes tῇ pistei toy eyangeliou,

Edified Edition (EDE)Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,

Μόνον ἀξίως τοῦ εὐαγγελίου τοῦ Χριστοῦ πολιτεύεσθε, ἵνα εἴτε ἐλθὼν καὶ ἰδὼν ὑμᾶς εἴτε ἀπὼν ⸀ἀκούω τὰ περὶ ὑμῶν, ὅτι στήκετε ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι, μιᾷ ψυχῇ συναθλοῦντες τῇ πίστει τοῦ εὐαγγελίου,

Phonetic (Greek): kai me ptyromenoi en medeni hypo ton antikeimenon (hetis ⸂estin aytois⸃ endeixis apoleias, ⸀hymon de soterias, kai toyto apo theoy,

Edified Edition (EDE)and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God.

καὶ μὴ πτυρόμενοι ἐν μηδενὶ ὑπὸ τῶν ἀντικειμένων (ἥτις ⸂ἐστὶν αὐτοῖς⸃ ἔνδειξις ἀπωλείας, ⸀ὑμῶν δὲ σωτηρίας, καὶ τοῦτο ἀπὸ θεοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): hoti hymin echaristhe to hyper Christoy, oy monon to eis ayton pisteyein alla kai to hyper aytoy paschein),

Edified Edition (EDE)For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,

ὅτι ὑμῖν ἐχαρίσθη τὸ ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ, οὐ μόνον τὸ εἰς αὐτὸν πιστεύειν ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸ ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ πάσχειν),

Phonetic (Greek): ton ayton agona echontes ohion eidete en emoi kai nyn akoyete en emoi.

Edified Edition (EDE)having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear to be in me.

τὸν αὐτὸν ἀγῶνα ἔχοντες οἷον εἴδετε ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ νῦν ἀκούετε ἐν ἐμοί.
