Chapter 1

Edified Edition (EDE)Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which are most surely believed among us,

Ἐπειδήπερ πολλοὶ ἐπεχείρησαν ἀνατάξασθαι διήγησιν περὶ τῶν πεπληροφορημένων ἐν ἡμῖν πραγμάτων,

Edified Edition (EDE)Even as they delivered them to us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

καθὼς παρέδοσαν ἡμῖν οἱ ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς αὐτόπται καὶ ὑπηρέται γενόμενοι τοῦ λόγου,

Edified Edition (EDE)it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus,

ἔδοξε κἀμοὶ παρηκολουθηκότι ἄνωθεν πᾶσιν ἀκριβῶς καθεξῆς σοι γράψαι, κράτιστε Θεόφιλε,

Edified Edition (EDE)that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

ἵνα ἐπιγνῷς περὶ ὧν κατηχήθης λόγων τὴν ἀσφάλειαν.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐgeneto en tais hemerais ⸀Ἡrῴdou basileos tes Ἰoudaias hiereys tis onomati Zacharias ex ephemerias Ἀbia, ⸀kai gyne ⸀aytῷ ek ton thygateron Ἀaron, kai to onoma aytes Ἐlisabet.

Edified Edition (EDE)There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ⸀Ἡρῴδου βασιλέως τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἱερεύς τις ὀνόματι Ζαχαρίας ἐξ ἐφημερίας Ἀβιά, ⸀καὶ γυνὴ ⸀αὐτῷ ἐκ τῶν θυγατέρων Ἀαρών, καὶ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Ἐλισάβετ.

Edified Edition (EDE)And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

ἦσαν δὲ δίκαιοι ἀμφότεροι ⸀ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ, πορευόμενοι ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ἐντολαῖς καὶ δικαιώμασιν τοῦ κυρίου ἄμεμπτοι.

Edified Edition (EDE)And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

καὶ οὐκ ἦν αὐτοῖς τέκνον, καθότι ⸂ἦν ἡ Ἐλισάβετ⸃ στεῖρα, καὶ ἀμφότεροι προβεβηκότες ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτῶν ἦσαν.

Edified Edition (EDE)And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,

Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ ἱερατεύειν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ τάξει τῆς ἐφημερίας αὐτοῦ ἔναντι τοῦ θεοῦ

Edified Edition (EDE)According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

κατὰ τὸ ἔθος τῆς ἱερατείας ἔλαχε τοῦ θυμιᾶσαι εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ κυρίου,

Phonetic (Greek): kai pan to plethos en toy laoy proseuchomenon exo tῇ horᾳ toy thymiamatos·

Edified Edition (EDE)And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

καὶ πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος ἦν τοῦ λαοῦ προσευχόμενον ἔξω τῇ ὥρᾳ τοῦ θυμιάματος·

Phonetic (Greek): ophthe de aytῷ angelos kyriou hestos ek dexion toy thysiasteriou toy thymiamatos.

Edified Edition (EDE)And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ ἄγγελος κυρίου ἑστὼς ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ θυμιάματος.

Phonetic (Greek): kai etarachthe Zacharias idon, kai phobos epepesen epʼ ayton.

Edified Edition (EDE)And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

καὶ ἐταράχθη Ζαχαρίας ἰδών, καὶ φόβος ἐπέπεσεν ἐπʼ αὐτόν.

Edified Edition (EDE)But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John."

εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ ἄγγελος· Μὴ φοβοῦ, Ζαχαρία, διότι εἰσηκούσθη ἡ δέησίς σου, καὶ ἡ γυνή σου Ἐλισάβετ γεννήσει υἱόν σοι, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰωάννην·

Phonetic (Greek): kai estai chara soi kai agalliasis, kai polloi epi tῇ ⸀genesei aytoy charesontai·

Edified Edition (EDE)And you will have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

καὶ ἔσται χαρά σοι καὶ ἀγαλλίασις, καὶ πολλοὶ ἐπὶ τῇ ⸀γενέσει αὐτοῦ χαρήσονται·

Phonetic (Greek): estai gar megas enopion ⸀toy kyriou, kai oinon kai sikera oy me piῃ, kai pneymatos hagiou plesthesetai eti ek koilias metros aytoy,

Edified Edition (EDE)For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and will drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

ἔσται γὰρ μέγας ἐνώπιον ⸀τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ οἶνον καὶ σίκερα οὐ μὴ πίῃ, καὶ πνεύματος ἁγίου πλησθήσεται ἔτι ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς αὐτοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): kai polloys ton yhion Ἰsrael epistrepsei epi kyrion ton theon ayton·

Edified Edition (EDE)And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

καὶ πολλοὺς τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐπιστρέψει ἐπὶ κύριον τὸν θεὸν αὐτῶν·

Phonetic (Greek): kai aytos proeleysetai enopion aytoy en pneymati kai dynamei Ἠliou, epistrepsai kardias pateron epi tekna kai apeitheis en phronesei dikaion, hetoimasai kyriῳ laon kateskeuasmenon.

Edified Edition (EDE)And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

καὶ αὐτὸς προελεύσεται ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ δυνάμει Ἠλίου, ἐπιστρέψαι καρδίας πατέρων ἐπὶ τέκνα καὶ ἀπειθεῖς ἐν φρονήσει δικαίων, ἑτοιμάσαι κυρίῳ λαὸν κατεσκευασμένον.

Phonetic (Greek): kai eipen Zacharias pros ton angelon· Kata ti gnosomai toyto; ego gar eimi presbytes kai he gyne mou probebekyia en tais hemerais aytes.

Edified Edition (EDE)And Zechariah said to the angel, "By what shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years."

καὶ εἶπεν Ζαχαρίας πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον· Κατὰ τί γνώσομαι τοῦτο; ἐγὼ γάρ εἰμι πρεσβύτης καὶ ἡ γυνή μου προβεβηκυῖα ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτῆς.

Phonetic (Greek): kai apokritheis ho angelos eipen aytῷ· Ἐgo eimi Gabriel ho parestekos enopion toy theoy, kai apestalen lalesai pros se kai eyangelisasthai soi tayta·

Edified Edition (EDE)And the angel answering said to him, "I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak to you, and to show you these glad tidings."

καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἐγώ εἰμι Γαβριὴλ ὁ παρεστηκὼς ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ ἀπεστάλην λαλῆσαι πρὸς σὲ καὶ εὐαγγελίσασθαί σοι ταῦτα·

Phonetic (Greek): kai idoy esῃ siopon kai me dynamenos lalesai achri hes hemeras genetai tayta, anthʼ hon oyk episteusas tois logois mou, ohitines plerothesontai eis ton kairon ayton.

Edified Edition (EDE)"And, behold, you will be mute, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because you believe not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season."

καὶ ἰδοὺ ἔσῃ σιωπῶν καὶ μὴ δυνάμενος λαλῆσαι ἄχρι ἧς ἡμέρας γένηται ταῦτα, ἀνθʼ ὧν οὐκ ἐπίστευσας τοῖς λόγοις μου, οἵτινες πληρωθήσονται εἰς τὸν καιρὸν αὐτῶν.

Phonetic (Greek): Kai en ho laos prosdokon ton Zacharian, kai ethaymazon en tῷ chronizein ⸂en tῷ naῷ ayton⸃.

Edified Edition (EDE)And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

Καὶ ἦν ὁ λαὸς προσδοκῶν τὸν Ζαχαρίαν, καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐν τῷ χρονίζειν ⸂ἐν τῷ ναῷ αὐτόν⸃.

Phonetic (Greek): exelthon de oyk ⸀edynato lalesai aytois, kai epegnosan hoti optasian heoraken en tῷ naῷ· kai aytos en dianeyon aytois, kai diemenen kophos.

Edified Edition (EDE)And when he came out, he could not speak to them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned to them, and remained speechless.

ἐξελθὼν δὲ οὐκ ⸀ἐδύνατο λαλῆσαι αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἐπέγνωσαν ὅτι ὀπτασίαν ἑώρακεν ἐν τῷ ναῷ· καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν διανεύων αὐτοῖς, καὶ διέμενεν κωφός.

Phonetic (Greek): kai egeneto hos eplesthesan ahi hemerai tes leitourgias aytoy, apelthen eis ton oikon aytoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τῆς λειτουργίας αὐτοῦ, ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.

Edified Edition (EDE)And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

Μετὰ δὲ ταύτας τὰς ἡμέρας συνέλαβεν Ἐλισάβετ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ· καὶ περιέκρυβεν ἑαυτὴν μῆνας πέντε, λέγουσα

Edified Edition (EDE)"Thus has the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein He looked on me, to take away my reproach among men."

ὅτι Οὕτως μοι ⸀πεποίηκεν κύριος ἐν ἡμέραις αἷς ἐπεῖδεν ⸀ἀφελεῖν ὄνειδός μου ἐν ἀνθρώποις.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐn de tῷ meni tῷ hektῳ apestale ho angelos Gabriel ⸀apo toy theoy eis polin tes Galilaias he onoma Nazareth

Edified Edition (EDE)And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

Ἐν δὲ τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ἕκτῳ ἀπεστάλη ὁ ἄγγελος Γαβριὴλ ⸀ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς πόλιν τῆς Γαλιλαίας ᾗ ὄνομα Ναζαρὲθ

Phonetic (Greek): pros parthenon ⸀emnesteumenen andri ho onoma Ἰoseph ex oikou Dauid, kai to onoma tes parthenou Mariam.

Edified Edition (EDE)To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

πρὸς παρθένον ⸀ἐμνηστευμένην ἀνδρὶ ᾧ ὄνομα Ἰωσὴφ ἐξ οἴκου Δαυίδ, καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς παρθένου Μαριάμ.

Phonetic (Greek): kai ⸀eiselthon pros ayten eipen· Chaire, kecharitomene, ho kyrios meta ⸀soy.

Edified Edition (EDE)And the angel came in to her, and said, "Hail, you that are highly favoured, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women."

καὶ ⸀εἰσελθὼν πρὸς αὐτὴν εἶπεν· Χαῖρε, κεχαριτωμένη, ὁ κύριος μετὰ ⸀σοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): he de ⸂epi tῷ logῳ dietarachthe⸃ kai dielogizeto potapos eie ho aspasmos ohytos.

Edified Edition (EDE)And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

ἡ δὲ ⸂ἐπὶ τῷ λόγῳ διεταράχθη⸃ καὶ διελογίζετο ποταπὸς εἴη ὁ ἀσπασμὸς οὗτος.

Phonetic (Greek): kai eipen ho angelos aytῇ· Me phoboy, Mariam, ehyres gar charin para tῷ theῷ·

Edified Edition (EDE)And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God."

καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος αὐτῇ· Μὴ φοβοῦ, Μαριάμ, εὗρες γὰρ χάριν παρὰ τῷ θεῷ·

Phonetic (Greek): kai idoy syllempsῃ en gastri kai texῃ yhion, kai kaleseis to onoma aytoy Ἰesoyn.

Edified Edition (EDE)"And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus."

καὶ ἰδοὺ συλλήμψῃ ἐν γαστρὶ καὶ τέξῃ υἱόν, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν.

Phonetic (Greek): ohytos estai megas kai yhios Ὑpsistou klethesetai, kai dosei aytῷ kyrios ho theos ton thronon Dauid toy patros aytoy,

Edified Edition (EDE)"He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the LORD God will give Him the throne of His father David."

οὗτος ἔσται μέγας καὶ υἱὸς Ὑψίστου κληθήσεται, καὶ δώσει αὐτῷ κύριος ὁ θεὸς τὸν θρόνον Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): kai basileysei epi ton oikon Ἰakob eis toys aionas, kai tes basileias aytoy oyk estai telos.

Edified Edition (EDE)"And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."

καὶ βασιλεύσει ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον Ἰακὼβ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας, καὶ τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔσται τέλος.

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?"

εἶπεν δὲ Μαριὰμ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον· Πῶς ἔσται τοῦτο, ἐπεὶ ἄνδρα οὐ γινώσκω;

Phonetic (Greek): kai apokritheis ho angelos eipen aytῇ· Pneyma hagion epeleysetai epi se, kai dynamis Ὑpsistou episkiasei soi· dio kai to gennomenon hagion klethesetai, yhios theoy·

Edified Edition (EDE)And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God."

καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῇ· Πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐπελεύσεται ἐπὶ σέ, καὶ δύναμις Ὑψίστου ἐπισκιάσει σοι· διὸ καὶ τὸ γεννώμενον ἅγιον κληθήσεται, υἱὸς θεοῦ·

Phonetic (Greek): kai idoy Ἐlisabet he ⸀syngenis sou kai ayte ⸀syneilephen yhion en gerei aytes, kai ohytos men hektos estin aytῇ tῇ kaloumenῃ steirᾳ·

Edified Edition (EDE)"And, behold, your cousin Elizabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren."

καὶ ἰδοὺ Ἐλισάβετ ἡ ⸀συγγενίς σου καὶ αὐτὴ ⸀συνείληφεν υἱὸν ἐν γήρει αὐτῆς, καὶ οὗτος μὴν ἕκτος ἐστὶν αὐτῇ τῇ καλουμένῃ στείρᾳ·

Phonetic (Greek): hoti oyk adynatesei para ⸂toy theoy⸃ pan ῥema.

Edified Edition (EDE)"For with God nothing will be impossible."

ὅτι οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ ⸂τοῦ θεοῦ⸃ πᾶν ῥῆμα.

Phonetic (Greek): eipen de Mariam· Ἰdoy he doyle kyriou· genoito moi kata to ῥema sou. kai apelthen apʼ aytes ho angelos.

Edified Edition (EDE)And Mary said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

εἶπεν δὲ Μαριάμ· Ἰδοὺ ἡ δούλη κυρίου· γένοιτό μοι κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἀπʼ αὐτῆς ὁ ἄγγελος.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἀnastasa de Mariam en tais hemerais taytais eporeythe eis ten oreinen meta spoudes eis polin Ἰoyda,

Edified Edition (EDE)And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

Ἀναστᾶσα δὲ Μαριὰμ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὴν ὀρεινὴν μετὰ σπουδῆς εἰς πόλιν Ἰούδα,

Phonetic (Greek): kai eiselthen eis ton oikon Zachariou kai espasato ten Ἐlisabet.

Edified Edition (EDE)And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ζαχαρίου καὶ ἠσπάσατο τὴν Ἐλισάβετ.

Phonetic (Greek): kai egeneto hos ekousen ⸂ton aspasmon tes Marias he Ἐlisabet⸃, eskirtesen to brephos en tῇ koiliᾳ aytes, kai eplesthe pneymatos hagiou he Ἐlisabet,

Edified Edition (EDE)And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit:

καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν ⸂τὸν ἀσπασμὸν τῆς Μαρίας ἡ Ἐλισάβετ⸃, ἐσκίρτησεν τὸ βρέφος ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐπλήσθη πνεύματος ἁγίου ἡ Ἐλισάβετ,

Phonetic (Greek): kai anephonesen ⸀kraugῇ megalῃ kai eipen· Eylogemene sy en gynaixin, kai eylogemenos ho karpos tes koilias sou.

Edified Edition (EDE)And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb."

καὶ ἀνεφώνησεν ⸀κραυγῇ μεγάλῃ καὶ εἶπεν· Εὐλογημένη σὺ ἐν γυναιξίν, καὶ εὐλογημένος ὁ καρπὸς τῆς κοιλίας σου.

Phonetic (Greek): kai pothen moi toyto hina elthῃ he meter toy kyriou mou pros ⸀eme;

Edified Edition (EDE)"And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?"

καὶ πόθεν μοι τοῦτο ἵνα ἔλθῃ ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ κυρίου μου πρὸς ⸀ἐμέ;

Edified Edition (EDE)"For, lo, as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy."

ἰδοὺ γὰρ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡ φωνὴ τοῦ ἀσπασμοῦ σου εἰς τὰ ὦτά μου, ἐσκίρτησεν ⸂ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει τὸ βρέφος⸃ ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ μου.

Edified Edition (EDE)"And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord."

καὶ μακαρία ἡ πιστεύσασα ὅτι ἔσται τελείωσις τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρὰ κυρίου.

Edified Edition (EDE)And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord,"

Καὶ εἶπεν Μαριάμ· Μεγαλύνει ἡ ψυχή μου τὸν κύριον,

Edified Edition (EDE)"And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour."

καὶ ἠγαλλίασεν τὸ πνεῦμά μου ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τῷ σωτῆρί μου·
