Chapter 1

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐn archῇ en ho logos, kai ho logos en pros ton theon, kai theos en ho logos.

Edified Edition (EDE)In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος, καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος.

Edified Edition (EDE)He was in the beginning with God.

Edified Edition (EDE)All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

Edified Edition (EDE)In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων·

Edified Edition (EDE)And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει, καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν.

Edified Edition (EDE)There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ θεοῦ, ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης·

Phonetic (Greek): ohytos elthen eis martyrian, hina martyresῃ peri toy photos, hina pantes pisteysosin diʼ aytoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.

οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν, ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἵνα πάντες πιστεύσωσιν διʼ αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): oyk en ekeinos to phos, allʼ hina martyresῃ peri toy photos.

Edified Edition (EDE)He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς, ἀλλʼ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός.

Edified Edition (EDE)That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον.

Edified Edition (EDE)He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

Ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἦν, καὶ ὁ κόσμος διʼ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ ὁ κόσμος αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω.

Edified Edition (EDE)He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

εἰς τὰ ἴδια ἦλθεν, καὶ οἱ ἴδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον.

Edified Edition (EDE)But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

ὅσοι δὲ ἔλαβον αὐτόν, ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα θεοῦ γενέσθαι, τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ,

Edified Edition (EDE)who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος σαρκὸς οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρὸς ἀλλʼ ἐκ θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν.

Edified Edition (EDE)And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Καὶ ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ, δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ πατρός, πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας·

Edified Edition (EDE)John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’"

(Ἰωάννης μαρτυρεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ κέκραγεν λέγων· Οὗτος ἦν ⸂ὃν εἶπον⸃· Ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν, ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν·)

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀hoti ek toy pleromatos aytoy hemeis pantes elabomen, kai charin anti charitos·

Edified Edition (EDE)And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

⸀ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν, καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος·

Phonetic (Greek): hoti ho nomos dia Moyseos edothe, he charis kai he aletheia dia Ἰesoy Christoy egeneto.

Edified Edition (EDE)For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

ὅτι ὁ νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη, ἡ χάρις καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο.

Phonetic (Greek): theon oydeis heoraken popote· ⸂monogenes theos⸃ ho on eis ton kolpon toy patros ekeinos exegesato.

Edified Edition (EDE)No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε· ⸂μονογενὴς θεὸς⸃ ὁ ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ πατρὸς ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο.

Phonetic (Greek): Kai ahyte estin he martyria toy Ἰoannou hote ⸀apesteilan ohi Ἰoudaioi ex Ἱerosolymon hiereis kai Leuitas hina erotesosin ayton· Sy tis ei;

Edified Edition (EDE)Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"

Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ μαρτυρία τοῦ Ἰωάννου ὅτε ⸀ἀπέστειλαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευίτας ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν αὐτόν· Σὺ τίς εἶ;

Phonetic (Greek): kai homologesen kai oyk ernesato, kai homologesen hoti ⸂Ἐgo oyk eimi⸃ ho christos.

Edified Edition (EDE)He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ."

καὶ ὡμολόγησεν καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσατο, καὶ ὡμολόγησεν ὅτι ⸂Ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ⸃ ὁ χριστός.

Edified Edition (EDE)And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No."

καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν· Τί οὖν; ⸂σὺ Ἠλίας εἶ⸃; καὶ λέγει· Οὐκ εἰμί. Ὁ προφήτης εἶ σύ; καὶ ἀπεκρίθη· Οὔ.

Phonetic (Greek): eipan oyn aytῷ· Tis ei; hina apokrisin domen tois pempsasin hemas· ti legeis peri seautoy;

Edified Edition (EDE)Then they said to him, "Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"

εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ· Τίς εἶ; ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς· τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ;

Phonetic (Greek): ephe· Ἐgo phone boontos en tῇ eremῳ· Eythynate ten hodon kyriou, kathos eipen Ἠsaias ho prophetes.

Edified Edition (EDE)He said: "I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord,”’ as the prophet Isaiah said."

ἔφη· Ἐγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· Εὐθύνατε τὴν ὁδὸν κυρίου, καθὼς εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας ὁ προφήτης.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀Kai apestalmenoi esan ek ton Pharisaion.

Edified Edition (EDE)Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.

⸀Καὶ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων.

Phonetic (Greek): kai erotesan ayton kai eipan aytῷ· Ti oyn baptizeis ei sy oyk ei ho christos ⸂oyde Ἠlias oyde⸃ ho prophetes;

Edified Edition (EDE)And they asked him, saying, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"

καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Τί οὖν βαπτίζεις εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ ὁ χριστὸς ⸂οὐδὲ Ἠλίας οὐδὲ⸃ ὁ προφήτης;

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe aytois ho Ἰoannes legon· Ἐgo baptizo en hydati· ⸀mesos hymon ⸀hesteken hon hymeis oyk oidate,

Edified Edition (EDE)John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know."

ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰωάννης λέγων· Ἐγὼ βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι· ⸀μέσος ὑμῶν ⸀ἕστηκεν ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε,

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀ho opiso mou ⸀erchomenos, ohy ⸂oyk eimi⸃ axios hina lyso aytoy ton himanta toy hypodematos.

Edified Edition (EDE)"It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose."

⸀ὁ ὀπίσω μου ⸀ἐρχόμενος, οὗ ⸂οὐκ εἰμὶ⸃ ἄξιος ἵνα λύσω αὐτοῦ τὸν ἱμάντα τοῦ ὑποδήματος.

Phonetic (Greek): tayta en Bethaniᾳ egeneto peran toy Ἰordanou, hopou en ⸀ho Ἰoannes baptizon.

Edified Edition (EDE)These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

ταῦτα ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐγένετο πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, ὅπου ἦν ⸀ὁ Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων.

Phonetic (Greek): Tῇ epayrion blepei ton Ἰesoyn erchomenon pros ayton, kai legei· Ἴde ho amnos toy theoy ho airon ten hamartian toy kosmou.

Edified Edition (EDE)The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"

Τῇ ἐπαύριον βλέπει τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ λέγει· Ἴδε ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου.

Edified Edition (EDE)"This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’"

οὗτός ἐστιν ⸀ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον· Ὀπίσω μου ἔρχεται ἀνὴρ ὃς ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν, ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν·

Phonetic (Greek): kago oyk edein ayton, allʼ hina phanerothῇ tῷ Ἰsrael dia toyto elthon ego ⸀en hydati baptizon.

Edified Edition (EDE)"I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water."

κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν, ἀλλʼ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον ἐγὼ ⸀ἐν ὕδατι βαπτίζων.

Phonetic (Greek): kai emartyresen Ἰoannes legon hoti Tetheamai to pneyma katabainon ⸀hos peristeran ex oyranoy, kai emeinen epʼ ayton·

Edified Edition (EDE)And John bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him."

καὶ ἐμαρτύρησεν Ἰωάννης λέγων ὅτι Τεθέαμαι τὸ πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον ⸀ὡς περιστερὰν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐπʼ αὐτόν·

Phonetic (Greek): kago oyk edein ayton, allʼ ho pempsas me baptizein en hydati ekeinos moi eipen· Ἐphʼ hon an idῃs to pneyma katabainon kai menon epʼ ayton, ohytos estin ho baptizon en pneymati hagiῳ·

Edified Edition (EDE)"I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’"

κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν, ἀλλʼ ὁ πέμψας με βαπτίζειν ἐν ὕδατι ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν· Ἐφʼ ὃν ἂν ἴδῃς τὸ πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον καὶ μένον ἐπʼ αὐτόν, οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ·

Phonetic (Greek): kago heoraka, kai memartyreka hoti ohytos estin ho ⸀eklektos toy theoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)"And I have seen and testified that this is the Chosen One of God."

κἀγὼ ἑώρακα, καὶ μεμαρτύρηκα ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ ⸀ἐκλεκτὸς τοῦ θεοῦ.

Edified Edition (EDE)Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.

Τῇ ἐπαύριον πάλιν εἱστήκει ⸀ὁ Ἰωάννης καὶ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ δύο,

Phonetic (Greek): kai emblepsas tῷ Ἰesoy peripatoynti legei· Ἴde ho amnos toy theoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!"

καὶ ἐμβλέψας τῷ Ἰησοῦ περιπατοῦντι λέγει· Ἴδε ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ.

Edified Edition (EDE)The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

καὶ ἤκουσαν ⸂οἱ δύο μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ⸃ λαλοῦντος καὶ ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ.

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, [JESUS]"What do you seek?"[/JESUS] They said to Him, "Rabbi" (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), "where are You staying?"

στραφεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας λέγει αὐτοῖς· Τί ζητεῖτε; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Ῥαββί (ὃ λέγεται ⸀μεθερμηνευόμενον Διδάσκαλε), ποῦ μένεις;

Phonetic (Greek): legei aytois· Ἔrchesthe kai ⸂opsesthe. elthan oyn⸃ kai eidan poy menei, kai parʼ aytῷ emeinan ten hemeran ekeinen· hora en hos dekate.

Edified Edition (EDE)He said to them, [JESUS]"Come and see."[/JESUS] They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).

λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ἔρχεσθε καὶ ⸂ὄψεσθε. ἦλθαν οὖν⸃ καὶ εἶδαν ποῦ μένει, καὶ παρʼ αὐτῷ ἔμειναν τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην· ὥρα ἦν ὡς δεκάτη.

Edified Edition (EDE)One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

ἦν Ἀνδρέας ὁ ἀδελφὸς Σίμωνος Πέτρου εἷς ἐκ τῶν δύο τῶν ἀκουσάντων παρὰ Ἰωάννου καὶ ἀκολουθησάντων αὐτῷ·

Phonetic (Greek): ehyriskei ohytos ⸀proton ton adelphon ton idion Simona kai legei aytῷ· Ehyrekamen ton Messian (ho estin methermeneuomenon christos).

Edified Edition (EDE)He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ).

εὑρίσκει οὗτος ⸀πρῶτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν τὸν ἴδιον Σίμωνα καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Εὑρήκαμεν τὸν Μεσσίαν (ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον χριστός).

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀egagen ayton pros ton Ἰesoyn. emblepsas aytῷ ho Ἰesoys eipen· Sy ei Simon ho yhios ⸀Ἰoannou, sy klethesῃ Kephas (ho hermeneyetai Petros).

Edified Edition (EDE)And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, [JESUS]"You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas"[/JESUS] (which is translated, A Stone).

⸀ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν. ἐμβλέψας αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Σὺ εἶ Σίμων ὁ υἱὸς ⸀Ἰωάννου, σὺ κληθήσῃ Κηφᾶς (ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται Πέτρος).

Phonetic (Greek): Tῇ epayrion ethelesen exelthein eis ten Galilaian. kai ehyriskei Philippon kai legei aytῷ ho Ἰesoys· Ἀkoloythei moi.

Edified Edition (EDE)The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, [JESUS]"Follow Me."[/JESUS]

Τῇ ἐπαύριον ἠθέλησεν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν. καὶ εὑρίσκει Φίλιππον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἀκολούθει μοι.

Phonetic (Greek): en de ho Philippos apo Bethsaida, ek tes poleos Ἀndreou kai Petrou.

Edified Edition (EDE)Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

ἦν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδά, ἐκ τῆς πόλεως Ἀνδρέου καὶ Πέτρου.

Phonetic (Greek): ehyriskei Philippos ton Nathanael kai legei aytῷ· Ὃn egrapsen Moyses en tῷ nomῳ kai ohi prophetai ehyrekamen, ⸀Ἰesoyn yhion toy Ἰoseph ton apo Nazaret.

Edified Edition (EDE)Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Ὃν ἔγραψεν Μωϋσῆς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ οἱ προφῆται εὑρήκαμεν, ⸀Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ.

Phonetic (Greek): kai eipen aytῷ Nathanael· Ἐk Nazaret dynatai ti agathon einai; legei aytῷ ⸀ho Philippos· Ἔrchou kai ide.

Edified Edition (EDE)And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."

καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ· Ἐκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι; λέγει αὐτῷ ⸀ὁ Φίλιππος· Ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε.

Phonetic (Greek): eiden ⸀ho Ἰesoys ton Nathanael erchomenon pros ayton kai legei peri aytoy· Ἴde alethos Ἰsraelites en ho dolos oyk estin.

Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, [JESUS]"Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!"[/JESUS]

εἶδεν ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὸν Ναθαναὴλ ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει περὶ αὐτοῦ· Ἴδε ἀληθῶς Ἰσραηλίτης ἐν ᾧ δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν.

Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῷ Nathanael· Pothen me ginoskeis; apekrithe Ἰesoys kai eipen aytῷ· Pro toy se Philippon phonesai onta hypo ten syken eidon se.

λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ· Πόθεν με γινώσκεις; ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Πρὸ τοῦ σε Φίλιππον φωνῆσαι ὄντα ὑπὸ τὴν συκῆν εἶδόν σε.

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe ⸂aytῷ Nathanael⸃· Ῥabbi, sy ei ho yhios toy theoy, sy ⸂basileys ei⸃ toy Ἰsrael.

Edified Edition (EDE)Nathanael answered and said to Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

ἀπεκρίθη ⸂αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ⸃· Ῥαββί, σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ, σὺ ⸂βασιλεὺς εἶ⸃ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ.

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe Ἰesoys kai eipen aytῷ· Ὅti eipon soi ⸀hoti eidon se hypokato tes sykes pisteyeis; meizo toyton ⸀opsῃ.

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ⸀ὅτι εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς πιστεύεις; μείζω τούτων ⸀ὄψῃ.

Phonetic (Greek): kai legei aytῷ· Ἀmen amen lego ⸀hymin, opsesthe ton oyranon aneῳgota kai toys angelous toy theoy anabainontas kai katabainontas epi ton yhion toy anthropou.

καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ⸀ὑμῖν, ὄψεσθε τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγότα καὶ τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
