Edified Edition (EDE)James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.

Ἰάκωβος θεοῦ καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος ταῖς δώδεκα φυλαῖς ταῖς ἐν τῇ διασπορᾷ χαίρειν.

Phonetic (Greek): Pasan charan hegesasthe, adelphoi mou, hotan peirasmois peripesete poikilois,

Edified Edition (EDE)My brothers, count it all joy when you fall into various trials;

Πᾶσαν χαρὰν ἡγήσασθε, ἀδελφοί μου, ὅταν πειρασμοῖς περιπέσητε ποικίλοις,

Phonetic (Greek): ginoskontes hoti to dokimion hymon tes pisteos katergazetai hypomonen·

Edified Edition (EDE)Knowing this, that the trying of your faith works patience.

γινώσκοντες ὅτι τὸ δοκίμιον ὑμῶν τῆς πίστεως κατεργάζεται ὑπομονήν·

Phonetic (Greek): he de hypomone ergon teleion echeto, hina ete teleioi kai holokleroi, en medeni leipomenoi.

Edified Edition (EDE)But let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

ἡ δὲ ὑπομονὴ ἔργον τέλειον ἐχέτω, ἵνα ἦτε τέλειοι καὶ ὁλόκληροι, ἐν μηδενὶ λειπόμενοι.

Phonetic (Greek): Ei de tis hymon leipetai sophias, aiteito para toy didontos theoy pasin haplos kai ⸀me oneidizontos, kai dothesetai aytῷ·

Edified Edition (EDE)If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all people liberally, and without reproach; and it shall be given him.

Εἰ δέ τις ὑμῶν λείπεται σοφίας, αἰτείτω παρὰ τοῦ διδόντος θεοῦ πᾶσιν ἁπλῶς καὶ ⸀μὴ ὀνειδίζοντος, καὶ δοθήσεται αὐτῷ·

Phonetic (Greek): aiteito de en pistei, meden diakrinomenos, ho gar diakrinomenos eoiken klydoni thalasses anemizomenῳ kai ῥipizomenῳ·

Edified Edition (EDE)But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he who wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

αἰτείτω δὲ ἐν πίστει, μηδὲν διακρινόμενος, ὁ γὰρ διακρινόμενος ἔοικεν κλύδωνι θαλάσσης ἀνεμιζομένῳ καὶ ῥιπιζομένῳ·

Phonetic (Greek): me gar oiestho ho anthropos ekeinos hoti lempsetai ti para toy kyriou

Edified Edition (EDE)For let not that person think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.

μὴ γὰρ οἰέσθω ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος ὅτι λήμψεταί τι παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου

Phonetic (Greek): aner dipsychos, akatastatos en pasais tais hodois aytoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)A double minded person is unstable in all his ways.

ἀνὴρ δίψυχος, ἀκατάστατος ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): Kauchastho de ho adelphos ho tapeinos en tῷ hypsei aytoy,

Edified Edition (EDE)Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:

Καυχάσθω δὲ ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὁ ταπεινὸς ἐν τῷ ὕψει αὐτοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): ho de ploysios en tῇ tapeinosei aytoy, hoti hos anthos chortou pareleysetai.

Edified Edition (EDE)But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.

ὁ δὲ πλούσιος ἐν τῇ ταπεινώσει αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ὡς ἄνθος χόρτου παρελεύσεται.

Phonetic (Greek): aneteilen gar ho helios syn tῷ kaysoni kai exeranen ton chorton, kai to anthos aytoy exepesen kai he eyprepeia toy prosopou aytoy apoleto· ohytos kai ho ploysios en tais poreiais aytoy maranthesetai.

Edified Edition (EDE)For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and the flower thereof falls, and the grace of the fashion of it perishes: so also shall the rich person fade away in his ways.

ἀνέτειλεν γὰρ ὁ ἥλιος σὺν τῷ καύσωνι καὶ ἐξήρανεν τὸν χόρτον, καὶ τὸ ἄνθος αὐτοῦ ἐξέπεσεν καὶ ἡ εὐπρέπεια τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ ἀπώλετο· οὕτως καὶ ὁ πλούσιος ἐν ταῖς πορείαις αὐτοῦ μαρανθήσεται.

Phonetic (Greek): Makarios aner hos hypomenei peirasmon, hoti dokimos genomenos lempsetai ton stephanon tes zoes, hon ⸀epengeilato tois agaposin ayton.

Edified Edition (EDE)Blessed is the person who endures trial: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Μακάριος ἀνὴρ ὃς ὑπομένει πειρασμόν, ὅτι δόκιμος γενόμενος λήμψεται τὸν στέφανον τῆς ζωῆς, ὃν ⸀ἐπηγγείλατο τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν.

Phonetic (Greek): medeis peirazomenos legeto hoti Ἀpo theoy peirazomai· ho gar theos apeirastos estin kakon, peirazei de aytos oydena.

Edified Edition (EDE)Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted of God": for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts He any person:

μηδεὶς πειραζόμενος λεγέτω ὅτι Ἀπὸ θεοῦ πειράζομαι· ὁ γὰρ θεὸς ἀπείραστός ἐστιν κακῶν, πειράζει δὲ αὐτὸς οὐδένα.

Phonetic (Greek): hekastos de peirazetai hypo tes idias epithymias exelkomenos kai deleazomenos·

Edified Edition (EDE)But every person is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

ἕκαστος δὲ πειράζεται ὑπὸ τῆς ἰδίας ἐπιθυμίας ἐξελκόμενος καὶ δελεαζόμενος·

Phonetic (Greek): eita he epithymia syllaboysa tiktei hamartian, he de hamartia apotelestheisa apokyei thanaton.

Edified Edition (EDE)Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

εἶτα ἡ ἐπιθυμία συλλαβοῦσα τίκτει ἁμαρτίαν, ἡ δὲ ἁμαρτία ἀποτελεσθεῖσα ἀποκύει θάνατον.

Phonetic (Greek): me planasthe, adelphoi mou agapetoi.

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not err, my beloved brothers.

μὴ πλανᾶσθε, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί.

Phonetic (Greek): Pasa dosis agathe kai pan dorema teleion anothen estin, katabainon apo toy patros ton photon, parʼ ho oyk eni parallage e tropes aposkiasma.

Edified Edition (EDE)Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Πᾶσα δόσις ἀγαθὴ καὶ πᾶν δώρημα τέλειον ἄνωθέν ἐστιν, καταβαῖνον ἀπὸ τοῦ πατρὸς τῶν φώτων, παρʼ ᾧ οὐκ ἔνι παραλλαγὴ ἢ τροπῆς ἀποσκίασμα.

Phonetic (Greek): bouletheis apekyesen hemas logῳ aletheias, eis to einai hemas aparchen tina ton aytoy ktismaton.

Edified Edition (EDE)Of His own will He brought us forth with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

βουληθεὶς ἀπεκύησεν ἡμᾶς λόγῳ ἀληθείας, εἰς τὸ εἶναι ἡμᾶς ἀπαρχήν τινα τῶν αὐτοῦ κτισμάτων.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀Ἴste, adelphoi mou agapetoi. esto ⸀de pas anthropos tachys eis to akoysai, bradys eis to lalesai, bradys eis orgen,

Edified Edition (EDE)Wherefore, my beloved brothers, let every person be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

⸀Ἴστε, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί. ἔστω ⸀δὲ πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ταχὺς εἰς τὸ ἀκοῦσαι, βραδὺς εἰς τὸ λαλῆσαι, βραδὺς εἰς ὀργήν,

Phonetic (Greek): orge gar andros dikaiosynen theoy ⸂oyk ergazetai⸃.

Edified Edition (EDE)For the wrath of people works not the righteousness of God.

ὀργὴ γὰρ ἀνδρὸς δικαιοσύνην θεοῦ ⸂οὐκ ἐργάζεται⸃.

Phonetic (Greek): dio apothemenoi pasan ῥyparian kai perisseian kakias en prayteti dexasthe ton emphyton logon ton dynamenon sosai tas psychas hymon.

Edified Edition (EDE)Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with gentleness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

διὸ ἀποθέμενοι πᾶσαν ῥυπαρίαν καὶ περισσείαν κακίας ἐν πραΰτητι δέξασθε τὸν ἔμφυτον λόγον τὸν δυνάμενον σῶσαι τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν.

Phonetic (Greek): Ginesthe de poietai logou kai me ⸂akroatai monon⸃ paralogizomenoi heautoys.

Edified Edition (EDE)But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Γίνεσθε δὲ ποιηταὶ λόγου καὶ μὴ ⸂ἀκροαταὶ μόνον⸃ παραλογιζόμενοι ἑαυτούς.

Phonetic (Greek): hoti ei tis akroates logou estin kai oy poietes, ohytos eoiken andri katanooynti to prosopon tes geneseos aytoy en esoptrῳ,

Edified Edition (EDE)For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like a person beholding his natural face in a glass:

ὅτι εἴ τις ἀκροατὴς λόγου ἐστὶν καὶ οὐ ποιητής, οὗτος ἔοικεν ἀνδρὶ κατανοοῦντι τὸ πρόσωπον τῆς γενέσεως αὐτοῦ ἐν ἐσόπτρῳ,

Phonetic (Greek): katenoesen gar heauton kai apelelythen kai eytheos epelatheto hopoios en.

Edified Edition (EDE)For he beholds himself, and goes his way, and straightway forgets what manner of person he was.

κατενόησεν γὰρ ἑαυτὸν καὶ ἀπελήλυθεν καὶ εὐθέως ἐπελάθετο ὁποῖος ἦν.

Phonetic (Greek): ho de parakypsas eis nomon teleion ton tes eleutherias kai parameinas, ⸀oyk akroates epilesmones genomenos alla poietes ergou, ohytos makarios en tῇ poiesei aytoy estai.

Edified Edition (EDE)But whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this person shall be blessed in his deed.

ὁ δὲ παρακύψας εἰς νόμον τέλειον τὸν τῆς ἐλευθερίας καὶ παραμείνας, ⸀οὐκ ἀκροατὴς ἐπιλησμονῆς γενόμενος ἀλλὰ ποιητὴς ἔργου, οὗτος μακάριος ἐν τῇ ποιήσει αὐτοῦ ἔσται.

Phonetic (Greek): Ei tis dokei threskos ⸀einai me chalinagogon glossan ⸀aytoy alla apaton kardian ⸀aytoy, toytou mataios he threskeia.

Edified Edition (EDE)If any person among you seems to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this person’s religion is vain.

Εἴ τις δοκεῖ θρησκὸς ⸀εἶναι μὴ χαλιναγωγῶν γλῶσσαν ⸀αὐτοῦ ἀλλὰ ἀπατῶν καρδίαν ⸀αὐτοῦ, τούτου μάταιος ἡ θρησκεία.

Phonetic (Greek): threskeia kathara kai amiantos para ⸀tῷ theῷ kai patri ahyte estin, episkeptesthai orphanoys kai cheras en tῇ thlipsei ayton, aspilon heauton terein apo toy kosmou.

Edified Edition (EDE)Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

θρησκεία καθαρὰ καὶ ἀμίαντος παρὰ ⸀τῷ θεῷ καὶ πατρὶ αὕτη ἐστίν, ἐπισκέπτεσθαι ὀρφανοὺς καὶ χήρας ἐν τῇ θλίψει αὐτῶν, ἄσπιλον ἑαυτὸν τηρεῖν ἀπὸ τοῦ κόσμου.
