Chapter 1

Edified Edition (EDE)In the former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

Τὸν μὲν πρῶτον λόγον ἐποιησάμην περὶ πάντων, ὦ Θεόφιλε, ὧν ἤρξατο ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς ποιεῖν τε καὶ διδάσκειν

Phonetic (Greek): achri hes hemeras enteilamenos tois apostolois dia pneymatos hagiou ohys exelexato anelemphthe·

Edified Edition (EDE)until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commands to the apostles whom He had chosen,

ἄχρι ἧς ἡμέρας ἐντειλάμενος τοῖς ἀποστόλοις διὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου οὓς ἐξελέξατο ἀνελήμφθη·

Phonetic (Greek): ohis kai parestesen heauton zonta meta to pathein ayton en pollois tekmeriois, diʼ hemeron tesserakonta optanomenos aytois kai legon ta peri tes basileias toy theoy·

Edified Edition (EDE)to whom He also showed Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

οἷς καὶ παρέστησεν ἑαυτὸν ζῶντα μετὰ τὸ παθεῖν αὐτὸν ἐν πολλοῖς τεκμηρίοις, διʼ ἡμερῶν τεσσεράκοντα ὀπτανόμενος αὐτοῖς καὶ λέγων τὰ περὶ τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ θεοῦ·

Phonetic (Greek): kai synalizomenos parengeilen aytois apo Ἱerosolymon me chorizesthai, alla perimenein ten epangelian toy patros hen ekoysate mou·

Edified Edition (EDE)And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, [JESUS]"Which," He said, "you have heard from Me;"[/JESUS]

καὶ συναλιζόμενος παρήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων μὴ χωρίζεσθαι, ἀλλὰ περιμένειν τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ πατρὸς ἣν ἠκούσατέ μου·

Phonetic (Greek): hoti Ἰoannes men ebaptisen hydati, hymeis de ⸂en pneymati baptisthesesthe⸃ hagiῳ oy meta pollas taytas hemeras.

Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"for John truly baptised with water, but you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."[/JESUS]

ὅτι Ἰωάννης μὲν ἐβάπτισεν ὕδατι, ὑμεῖς δὲ ⸂ἐν πνεύματι βαπτισθήσεσθε⸃ ἁγίῳ οὐ μετὰ πολλὰς ταύτας ἡμέρας.

Phonetic (Greek): Ohi men oyn synelthontes ⸀eroton ayton legontes· Kyrie, ei en tῷ chronῳ toytῳ apokathistaneis ten basileian tῷ Ἰsrael;

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?"

Οἱ μὲν οὖν συνελθόντες ⸀ἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες· Κύριε, εἰ ἐν τῷ χρόνῳ τούτῳ ἀποκαθιστάνεις τὴν βασιλείαν τῷ Ἰσραήλ;

Phonetic (Greek): eipen ⸀de pros aytoys· Oych hymon estin gnonai chronous e kairoys ohys ho pater etheto en tῇ idiᾳ exousiᾳ,

Edified Edition (EDE)And He said to them, [JESUS]"It is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father has put in His own authority."[/JESUS]

εἶπεν ⸀δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς· Οὐχ ὑμῶν ἐστιν γνῶναι χρόνους ἢ καιροὺς οὓς ὁ πατὴρ ἔθετο ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ,

Phonetic (Greek): alla lempsesthe dynamin epelthontos toy hagiou pneymatos ephʼ hymas, kai esesthe ⸀mou martyres en te Ἰerousalem kai en pasῃ tῇ Ἰoudaiᾳ kai Samareiᾳ kai heos eschatou tes ges.

Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."[/JESUS]

ἀλλὰ λήμψεσθε δύναμιν ἐπελθόντος τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς, καὶ ἔσεσθέ ⸀μου μάρτυρες ἔν τε Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ ἐν πάσῃ τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ καὶ Σαμαρείᾳ καὶ ἕως ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς.

Phonetic (Greek): kai tayta eipon bleponton ayton eperthe kai nephele hypelaben ayton apo ton ophthalmon ayton.

Edified Edition (EDE)Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν βλεπόντων αὐτῶν ἐπήρθη καὶ νεφέλη ὑπέλαβεν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν.

Phonetic (Greek): kai hos atenizontes esan eis ton oyranon poreuomenou aytoy, kai idoy andres dyo pareistekeisan aytois en ⸂esthesesi leukais⸃,

Edified Edition (EDE)And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,

καὶ ὡς ἀτενίζοντες ἦσαν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν πορευομένου αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνδρες δύο παρειστήκεισαν αὐτοῖς ἐν ⸂ἐσθήσεσι λευκαῖς⸃,

Phonetic (Greek): ohi kai eipan· Ἄndres Galilaioi, ti hestekate ⸀blepontes eis ton oyranon; ohytos ho Ἰesoys ho analemphtheis aphʼ hymon eis ton oyranon ohytos eleysetai hon tropon etheasasthe ayton poreuomenon eis ton oyranon.

Edified Edition (EDE)who also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."

οἳ καὶ εἶπαν· Ἄνδρες Γαλιλαῖοι, τί ἑστήκατε ⸀βλέποντες εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν; οὗτος ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὁ ἀναλημφθεὶς ἀφʼ ὑμῶν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν οὕτως ἐλεύσεται ὃν τρόπον ἐθεάσασθε αὐτὸν πορευόμενον εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν.

Phonetic (Greek): Tote hypestrepsan eis Ἰerousalem apo orous toy kaloumenou Ἐlaionos, ho estin engys Ἰerousalem sabbatou echon hodon.

Edified Edition (EDE)Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.

Τότε ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἀπὸ ὄρους τοῦ καλουμένου Ἐλαιῶνος, ὅ ἐστιν ἐγγὺς Ἰερουσαλὴμ σαββάτου ἔχον ὁδόν.

Phonetic (Greek): kai hote eiselthon, ⸂eis to hyperῷon anebesan⸃ ohy esan katamenontes, ho te Petros kai ⸂Ἰoannes kai Ἰakobos⸃ kai Ἀndreas, Philippos kai Thomas, Bartholomaios kai Maththaios, Ἰakobos Ἁlphaiou kai Simon ho zelotes kai Ἰoydas Ἰakobou.

Edified Edition (EDE)And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James.

καὶ ὅτε εἰσῆλθον, ⸂εἰς τὸ ὑπερῷον ἀνέβησαν⸃ οὗ ἦσαν καταμένοντες, ὅ τε Πέτρος καὶ ⸂Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἰάκωβος⸃ καὶ Ἀνδρέας, Φίλιππος καὶ Θωμᾶς, Βαρθολομαῖος καὶ Μαθθαῖος, Ἰάκωβος Ἁλφαίου καὶ Σίμων ὁ ζηλωτὴς καὶ Ἰούδας Ἰακώβου.

Phonetic (Greek): ohytoi pantes esan proskarteroyntes homothymadon tῇ ⸀proseuchῇ syn gynaixin kai ⸀Mariam tῇ metri toy Ἰesoy kai ⸀syn tois adelphois aytoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

οὗτοι πάντες ἦσαν προσκαρτεροῦντες ὁμοθυμαδὸν τῇ ⸀προσευχῇ σὺν γυναιξὶν καὶ ⸀Μαριὰμ τῇ μητρὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ⸀σὺν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): Kai en tais hemerais taytais anastas Petros en mesῳ ton ⸀adelphon eipen (en te ochlos onomaton epi to ayto ⸀hos hekaton eikosi)·

Edified Edition (EDE)And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said,

Καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις ἀναστὰς Πέτρος ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ⸀ἀδελφῶν εἶπεν (ἦν τε ὄχλος ὀνομάτων ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ⸀ὡς ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι)·

Phonetic (Greek): Ἄndres adelphoi, edei plerothenai ten ⸀graphen hen proeipe to pneyma to hagion dia stomatos Dauid peri Ἰoyda toy genomenou hodegoy tois syllaboysin ⸀Ἰesoyn,

Edified Edition (EDE)"Men and brothers, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus;

Ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί, ἔδει πληρωθῆναι τὴν ⸀γραφὴν ἣν προεῖπε τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον διὰ στόματος Δαυὶδ περὶ Ἰούδα τοῦ γενομένου ὁδηγοῦ τοῖς συλλαβοῦσιν ⸀Ἰησοῦν,

Phonetic (Greek): hoti katerithmemenos en ⸀en hemin kai elachen ton kleron tes diakonias taytes.—

Edified Edition (EDE)for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry."

ὅτι κατηριθμημένος ἦν ⸀ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ἔλαχεν τὸν κλῆρον τῆς διακονίας ταύτης.—

Phonetic (Greek): Ohytos men oyn ektesato chorion ek misthoy tes adikias, kai prenes genomenos elakesen mesos, kai exechythe panta ta splanchna aytoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)(Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out.

Οὗτος μὲν οὖν ἐκτήσατο χωρίον ἐκ μισθοῦ τῆς ἀδικίας, καὶ πρηνὴς γενόμενος ἐλάκησεν μέσος, καὶ ἐξεχύθη πάντα τὰ σπλάγχνα αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): kai gnoston egeneto pasi tois katoikoysin Ἰerousalem, hoste klethenai to chorion ekeino tῇ ⸀idiᾳ dialektῳ ayton Ἁkeldamach, toytʼ estin Chorion Ahimatos.—

Edified Edition (EDE)And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)

καὶ γνωστὸν ἐγένετο πᾶσι τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν Ἰερουσαλήμ, ὥστε κληθῆναι τὸ χωρίον ἐκεῖνο τῇ ⸀ἰδίᾳ διαλέκτῳ αὐτῶν Ἁκελδαμάχ, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν Χωρίον Αἵματος.—

Phonetic (Greek): gegraptai gar en biblῳ psalmon· Genetheto he epaulis aytoy eremos kai me esto ho katoikon en aytῇ, kai· Ten episkopen aytoy ⸀labeto heteros.

Edified Edition (EDE)"For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be desolate, and let no one live in it’; and, ‘Let another take his office.’"

γέγραπται γὰρ ἐν βίβλῳ ψαλμῶν· Γενηθήτω ἡ ἔπαυλις αὐτοῦ ἔρημος καὶ μὴ ἔστω ὁ κατοικῶν ἐν αὐτῇ, καί· Τὴν ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτοῦ ⸀λαβέτω ἕτερος.

Phonetic (Greek): dei oyn ton synelthonton hemin andron en panti chronῳ ⸀ho eiselthen kai exelthen ephʼ hemas ho kyrios Ἰesoys,

Edified Edition (EDE)"Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

δεῖ οὖν τῶν συνελθόντων ἡμῖν ἀνδρῶν ἐν παντὶ χρόνῳ ⸀ᾧ εἰσῆλθεν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς ὁ κύριος Ἰησοῦς,

Phonetic (Greek): arxamenos apo toy baptismatos Ἰoannou heos tes hemeras hes anelemphthe aphʼ hemon, martyra tes anastaseos aytoy ⸂syn hemin genesthai⸃ hena toyton.

Edified Edition (EDE)beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection."

ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τοῦ βαπτίσματος Ἰωάννου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἧς ἀνελήμφθη ἀφʼ ἡμῶν, μάρτυρα τῆς ἀναστάσεως αὐτοῦ ⸂σὺν ἡμῖν γενέσθαι⸃ ἕνα τούτων.

Phonetic (Greek): kai estesan dyo, Ἰoseph ton kaloymenon Barsabban, hos epeklethe Ἰoystos, kai Maththian.

Edified Edition (EDE)And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

καὶ ἔστησαν δύο, Ἰωσὴφ τὸν καλούμενον Βαρσαββᾶν, ὃς ἐπεκλήθη Ἰοῦστος, καὶ Μαθθίαν.

Phonetic (Greek): kai proseuxamenoi eipan Sy kyrie kardiognosta panton, anadeixon hon exelexo, ek toyton ton dyo hena,

Edified Edition (EDE)And they prayed and said, "You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen

καὶ προσευξάμενοι εἶπαν Σὺ κύριε καρδιογνῶστα πάντων, ἀνάδειξον ὃν ἐξελέξω, ἐκ τούτων τῶν δύο ἕνα,

Phonetic (Greek): labein ton ⸀topon tes diakonias taytes kai apostoles, ⸀aphʼ hes parebe Ἰoydas poreuthenai eis ton topon ton idion.

Edified Edition (EDE)to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place."

λαβεῖν τὸν ⸀τόπον τῆς διακονίας ταύτης καὶ ἀποστολῆς, ⸀ἀφʼ ἧς παρέβη Ἰούδας πορευθῆναι εἰς τὸν τόπον τὸν ἴδιον.

Phonetic (Greek): kai edokan klerous ⸀aytois, kai epesen ho kleros epi Maththian, kai synkatepsephisthe meta ton hendeka apostolon.

Edified Edition (EDE)And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

καὶ ἔδωκαν κλήρους ⸀αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἔπεσεν ὁ κλῆρος ἐπὶ Μαθθίαν, καὶ συγκατεψηφίσθη μετὰ τῶν ἕνδεκα ἀποστόλων.
