Chapter 1

Phonetic (Greek): Ὁ presbyteros eklektῇ kyriᾳ kai tois teknois aytes, ohys ego agapo en aletheiᾳ, kai oyk ego monos alla kai pantes ohi egnokotes ten aletheian,

Edified Edition (EDE)The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all those who have known the truth;

Ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις αὐτῆς, οὓς ἐγὼ ἀγαπῶ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ, καὶ οὐκ ἐγὼ μόνος ἀλλὰ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐγνωκότες τὴν ἀλήθειαν,

Phonetic (Greek): dia ten aletheian ten menousan en hemin, kai methʼ hemon estai eis ton aiona·

Edified Edition (EDE)For the truth’s sake, which remains in us, and shall be with us forever.

διὰ τὴν ἀλήθειαν τὴν μένουσαν ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ μεθʼ ἡμῶν ἔσται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα·

Phonetic (Greek): estai methʼ hemon charis eleos eirene para theoy patros, kai ⸀para Ἰesoy Christoy toy yhioy toy patros, en aletheiᾳ kai agapῃ.

Edified Edition (EDE)Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

ἔσται μεθʼ ἡμῶν χάρις ἔλεος εἰρήνη παρὰ θεοῦ πατρός, καὶ ⸀παρὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός, ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ ἀγάπῃ.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐcharen lian hoti ehyreka ek ton teknon sou peripatoyntas en aletheiᾳ, kathos entolen elabomen para toy patros.

Edified Edition (EDE)I rejoiced greatly that I found of your children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

Ἐχάρην λίαν ὅτι εὕρηκα ἐκ τῶν τέκνων σου περιπατοῦντας ἐν ἀληθείᾳ, καθὼς ἐντολὴν ἐλάβομεν παρὰ τοῦ πατρός.

Phonetic (Greek): kai nyn eroto se, kyria, oych hos entolen ⸂kainen graphon soi⸃ alla hen eichomen apʼ arches, hina agapomen allelous.

Edified Edition (EDE)And now I beseech you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

καὶ νῦν ἐρωτῶ σε, κυρία, οὐχ ὡς ἐντολὴν ⸂καινὴν γράφων σοι⸃ ἀλλὰ ἣν εἴχομεν ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς, ἵνα ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους.

Phonetic (Greek): kai ahyte estin he agape, hina peripatomen kata tas entolas aytoy· ahyte ⸂he entole estin⸃, kathos ekoysate apʼ arches, hina en aytῇ peripatete.

Edified Edition (EDE)And this is love, that we walk after His commandments. This is the commandment, That, as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.

καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἀγάπη, ἵνα περιπατῶμεν κατὰ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ· αὕτη ⸂ἡ ἐντολή ἐστιν⸃, καθὼς ἠκούσατε ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς, ἵνα ἐν αὐτῇ περιπατῆτε.

Phonetic (Greek): hoti polloi planoi ⸀exelthon eis ton kosmon, ohi me homologoyntes Ἰesoyn Christon erchomenon en sarki· ohytos estin ho planos kai ho antichristos.

Edified Edition (EDE)For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

ὅτι πολλοὶ πλάνοι ⸀ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸν κόσμον, οἱ μὴ ὁμολογοῦντες Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ πλάνος καὶ ὁ ἀντίχριστος.

Phonetic (Greek): blepete heautoys, hina me ⸀apolesete ha ⸀eirgasametha, alla misthon plere ⸀apolabete.

Edified Edition (EDE)Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have done, but that we receive a full reward.

βλέπετε ἑαυτούς, ἵνα μὴ ⸀ἀπολέσητε ἃ ⸀εἰργασάμεθα, ἀλλὰ μισθὸν πλήρη ⸀ἀπολάβητε.

Phonetic (Greek): pas ho ⸀proagon kai me menon en tῇ didachῇ toy Christoy theon oyk echei· ho menon en tῇ ⸀didachῇ, ohytos kai ton patera kai ton yhion echei.

Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever transgresses, and remains not in the doctrine of Christ, has not God. He who remains in the doctrine of Christ, he has both the Father and the Son.

πᾶς ὁ ⸀προάγων καὶ μὴ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει· ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ ⸀διδαχῇ, οὗτος καὶ τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει.

Phonetic (Greek): ei tis erchetai pros hymas kai tayten ten didachen oy pherei, me lambanete ayton eis oikian kai chairein aytῷ me legete·

Edified Edition (EDE)If there come any to you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither greet him:

εἴ τις ἔρχεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει, μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν καὶ χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε·

Phonetic (Greek): ho ⸂legon gar⸃ aytῷ chairein koinonei tois ergois aytoy tois ponerois.

Edified Edition (EDE)For he who greets him is partaker of his evil deeds.

ὁ ⸂λέγων γὰρ⸃ αὐτῷ χαίρειν κοινωνεῖ τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ τοῖς πονηροῖς.

Phonetic (Greek): Polla echon hymin graphein oyk eboulethen dia chartou kai melanos, alla elpizo ⸀genesthai pros hymas kai stoma pros stoma lalesai, hina he chara ⸀hymon ⸂pepleromene e⸃.

Edified Edition (EDE)Having many things to write to you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come to you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

Πολλὰ ἔχων ὑμῖν γράφειν οὐκ ἐβουλήθην διὰ χάρτου καὶ μέλανος, ἀλλὰ ἐλπίζω ⸀γενέσθαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ στόμα πρὸς στόμα λαλῆσαι, ἵνα ἡ χαρὰ ⸀ὑμῶν ⸂πεπληρωμένη ᾖ⸃.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἀspazetai se ta tekna tes adelphes sou tes ⸀eklektes.

Edified Edition (EDE)The children of your elect sister greet you. Amen.

Ἀσπάζεταί σε τὰ τέκνα τῆς ἀδελφῆς σου τῆς ⸀ἐκλεκτῆς.
