Chapter 1

Edified Edition (EDE)Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in all Achaia:

Παῦλος ἀπόστολος ⸂Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ⸃ διὰ θελήματος θεοῦ καὶ Τιμόθεος ὁ ἀδελφὸς τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ θεοῦ τῇ οὔσῃ ἐν Κορίνθῳ, σὺν τοῖς ἁγίοις πᾶσιν τοῖς οὖσιν ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ Ἀχαΐᾳ·

Phonetic (Greek): charis hymin kai eirene apo theoy patros hemon kai kyriou Ἰesoy Christoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): Eylogetos ho theos kai pater toy kyriou hemon Ἰesoy Christoy, ho pater ton oiktirmon kai theos pases parakleseos,

Edified Edition (EDE)Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

Εὐλογητὸς ὁ θεὸς καὶ πατὴρ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὁ πατὴρ τῶν οἰκτιρμῶν καὶ θεὸς πάσης παρακλήσεως,

Phonetic (Greek): ho parakalon hemas epi pasῃ tῇ thlipsei hemon, eis to dynasthai hemas parakalein toys en pasῃ thlipsei dia tes parakleseos hes parakaloymetha aytoi hypo toy theoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

ὁ παρακαλῶν ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ πάσῃ τῇ θλίψει ἡμῶν, εἰς τὸ δύνασθαι ἡμᾶς παρακαλεῖν τοὺς ἐν πάσῃ θλίψει διὰ τῆς παρακλήσεως ἧς παρακαλούμεθα αὐτοὶ ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): hoti kathos perisseyei ta pathemata toy Christoy eis hemas, ohytos dia toy Christoy perisseyei kai he paraklesis hemon.

Edified Edition (EDE)For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.

ὅτι καθὼς περισσεύει τὰ παθήματα τοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς ἡμᾶς, οὕτως διὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ περισσεύει καὶ ἡ παράκλησις ἡμῶν.

Phonetic (Greek): eite de thlibometha, hyper tes hymon parakleseos kai soterias· ⸂eite parakaloymetha, hyper tes hymon parakleseos⸃ tes energoumenes en hypomonῇ ton ayton pathematon hon kai hemeis paschomen,

Edified Edition (EDE)Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.

εἴτε δὲ θλιβόμεθα, ὑπὲρ τῆς ὑμῶν παρακλήσεως καὶ σωτηρίας· ⸂εἴτε παρακαλούμεθα, ὑπὲρ τῆς ὑμῶν παρακλήσεως⸃ τῆς ἐνεργουμένης ἐν ὑπομονῇ τῶν αὐτῶν παθημάτων ὧν καὶ ἡμεῖς πάσχομεν,

Phonetic (Greek): kai he elpis hemon bebaia hyper ⸀hymon· eidotes hoti ⸀hos koinonoi este ton pathematon, ohytos kai tes parakleseos.

Edified Edition (EDE)And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

καὶ ἡ ἐλπὶς ἡμῶν βεβαία ὑπὲρ ⸀ὑμῶν· εἰδότες ὅτι ⸀ὡς κοινωνοί ἐστε τῶν παθημάτων, οὕτως καὶ τῆς παρακλήσεως.

Phonetic (Greek): Oy gar thelomen hymas agnoein, adelphoi, ⸀hyper tes thlipseos hemon tes ⸀genomenes en tῇ Ἀsiᾳ, hoti kathʼ hyperbolen ⸂hyper dynamin ebarethemen⸃, hoste exaporethenai hemas kai toy zen·

Edified Edition (EDE)For we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life.

Οὐ γὰρ θέλομεν ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν, ἀδελφοί, ⸀ὑπὲρ τῆς θλίψεως ἡμῶν τῆς ⸀γενομένης ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ, ὅτι καθʼ ὑπερβολὴν ⸂ὑπὲρ δύναμιν ἐβαρήθημεν⸃, ὥστε ἐξαπορηθῆναι ἡμᾶς καὶ τοῦ ζῆν·

Phonetic (Greek): alla aytoi en heautois to apokrima toy thanatou eschekamen, hina me pepoithotes omen ephʼ heautois allʼ epi tῷ theῷ tῷ egeironti toys nekroys·

Edified Edition (EDE)Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead,

ἀλλὰ αὐτοὶ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς τὸ ἀπόκριμα τοῦ θανάτου ἐσχήκαμεν, ἵνα μὴ πεποιθότες ὦμεν ἐφʼ ἑαυτοῖς ἀλλʼ ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τῷ ἐγείροντι τοὺς νεκρούς·

Phonetic (Greek): hos ek telikoytou thanatou errysato hemas kai ⸀ῥysetai, eis hon elpikamen hoti kai eti ῥysetai,

Edified Edition (EDE)who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us,

ὃς ἐκ τηλικούτου θανάτου ἐρρύσατο ἡμᾶς καὶ ⸀ῥύσεται, εἰς ὃν ἠλπίκαμεν ὅτι καὶ ἔτι ῥύσεται,

Phonetic (Greek): synypourgoynton kai hymon hyper hemon tῇ deesei, hina ek pollon prosopon to eis hemas charisma dia pollon eycharistethῇ hyper ⸀hemon.

Edified Edition (EDE)you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many.

συνυπουργούντων καὶ ὑμῶν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν τῇ δεήσει, ἵνα ἐκ πολλῶν προσώπων τὸ εἰς ἡμᾶς χάρισμα διὰ πολλῶν εὐχαριστηθῇ ὑπὲρ ⸀ἡμῶν.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἡ gar kaychesis hemon ahyte estin, to martyrion tes syneideseos hemon, hoti en ⸀hagioteti kai eilikrineiᾳ ⸀toy theoy, ⸀oyk en sophiᾳ sarkikῇ allʼ en chariti theoy, anestraphemen en tῷ kosmῳ, perissoteros de pros hymas·

Edified Edition (EDE)For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.

Ἡ γὰρ καύχησις ἡμῶν αὕτη ἐστίν, τὸ μαρτύριον τῆς συνειδήσεως ἡμῶν, ὅτι ἐν ⸀ἁγιότητι καὶ εἰλικρινείᾳ ⸀τοῦ θεοῦ, ⸀οὐκ ἐν σοφίᾳ σαρκικῇ ἀλλʼ ἐν χάριτι θεοῦ, ἀνεστράφημεν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ, περισσοτέρως δὲ πρὸς ὑμᾶς·

Phonetic (Greek): oy gar alla graphomen hymin allʼ e ha anaginoskete e kai epiginoskete, elpizo de ⸀hoti heos telous epignosesthe,

Edified Edition (EDE)For we are not writing any other things to you than what you read or understand. Now I trust you will understand, even to the end

οὐ γὰρ ἄλλα γράφομεν ὑμῖν ἀλλʼ ἢ ἃ ἀναγινώσκετε ἢ καὶ ἐπιγινώσκετε, ἐλπίζω δὲ ⸀ὅτι ἕως τέλους ἐπιγνώσεσθε,

Phonetic (Greek): kathos kai epegnote hemas apo merous, hoti kaychema hymon esmen kathaper kai hymeis hemon en tῇ hemerᾳ toy kyriou ⸀hemon Ἰesoy.

Edified Edition (EDE)(as also you have understood us in part), that we are your boast as you also are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus.

καθὼς καὶ ἐπέγνωτε ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ μέρους, ὅτι καύχημα ὑμῶν ἐσμεν καθάπερ καὶ ὑμεῖς ἡμῶν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ κυρίου ⸀ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): Kai taytῃ tῇ pepoithesei eboulomen ⸂proteron pros hymas elthein⸃, hina deuteran ⸀charin ⸀schete,

Edified Edition (EDE)And in this confidence I intended to come to you before, that you might have a second benefit,

Καὶ ταύτῃ τῇ πεποιθήσει ἐβουλόμην ⸂πρότερον πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐλθεῖν⸃, ἵνα δευτέραν ⸀χάριν ⸀σχῆτε,

Phonetic (Greek): kai diʼ hymon dielthein eis Makedonian, kai palin apo Makedonias elthein pros hymas kai hyphʼ hymon propemphthenai eis ten Ἰoudaian.

Edified Edition (EDE)to pass by way you to Macedonia, to come again from Macedonia to you, and be helped by you on my way to Judea.

καὶ διʼ ὑμῶν διελθεῖν εἰς Μακεδονίαν, καὶ πάλιν ἀπὸ Μακεδονίας ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ ὑφʼ ὑμῶν προπεμφθῆναι εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν.

Phonetic (Greek): toyto oyn ⸀boulomenos meti ara tῇ elaphriᾳ echresamen; e ha bouleyomai kata sarka bouleyomai, hina e parʼ emoi to Nai nai kai to Oy oy;

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, when I was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things I plan, do I plan according to the flesh, that with me there should be Yes, Yes, and No, No?

τοῦτο οὖν ⸀βουλόμενος μήτι ἄρα τῇ ἐλαφρίᾳ ἐχρησάμην; ἢ ἃ βουλεύομαι κατὰ σάρκα βουλεύομαι, ἵνα ᾖ παρʼ ἐμοὶ τὸ Ναὶ ναὶ καὶ τὸ Οὒ οὔ;

Phonetic (Greek): pistos de ho theos hoti ho logos hemon ho pros hymas oyk ⸀estin Nai kai Oy.

Edified Edition (EDE)But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes and No.

πιστὸς δὲ ὁ θεὸς ὅτι ὁ λόγος ἡμῶν ὁ πρὸς ὑμᾶς οὐκ ⸀ἔστιν Ναὶ καὶ Οὔ.

Phonetic (Greek): ho ⸂toy theoy gar⸃ yhios ⸂Ἰesoys Christos⸃ ho en hymin diʼ hemon kerychtheis, diʼ emoy kai Silouanoy kai Timotheou, oyk egeneto Nai kai Oy, alla Nai en aytῷ gegonen·

Edified Edition (EDE)For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, by me, Silvanus, and Timothy, was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes.

ὁ ⸂τοῦ θεοῦ γὰρ⸃ υἱὸς ⸂Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς⸃ ὁ ἐν ὑμῖν διʼ ἡμῶν κηρυχθείς, διʼ ἐμοῦ καὶ Σιλουανοῦ καὶ Τιμοθέου, οὐκ ἐγένετο Ναὶ καὶ Οὒ, ἀλλὰ Ναὶ ἐν αὐτῷ γέγονεν·

Phonetic (Greek): hosai gar epangeliai theoy, en aytῷ to Nai· ⸀dio kai ⸂diʼ aytoy⸃ to Ἀmen tῷ theῷ pros doxan diʼ hemon.

Edified Edition (EDE)For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.

ὅσαι γὰρ ἐπαγγελίαι θεοῦ, ἐν αὐτῷ τὸ Ναί· ⸀διὸ καὶ ⸂διʼ αὐτοῦ⸃ τὸ Ἀμὴν τῷ θεῷ πρὸς δόξαν διʼ ἡμῶν.

Phonetic (Greek): ho de bebaion hemas syn hymin eis Christon kai chrisas hemas theos,

Edified Edition (EDE)Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God,

ὁ δὲ βεβαιῶν ἡμᾶς σὺν ὑμῖν εἰς Χριστὸν καὶ χρίσας ἡμᾶς θεός,

Phonetic (Greek): ho kai sphragisamenos hemas kai doys ton arrabona toy pneymatos en tais kardiais hemon.

Edified Edition (EDE)who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

ὁ καὶ σφραγισάμενος ἡμᾶς καὶ δοὺς τὸν ἀρραβῶνα τοῦ πνεύματος ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐgo de martyra ton theon epikaloymai epi ten emen psychen, hoti pheidomenos hymon oyketi elthon eis Korinthon.

Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover I call God as witness against my soul, that to spare you I came no more to Corinth.

Ἐγὼ δὲ μάρτυρα τὸν θεὸν ἐπικαλοῦμαι ἐπὶ τὴν ἐμὴν ψυχήν, ὅτι φειδόμενος ὑμῶν οὐκέτι ἦλθον εἰς Κόρινθον.

Phonetic (Greek): oych hoti kyrieyomen hymon tes pisteos, alla synergoi esmen tes charas hymon, tῇ gar pistei hestekate.

Edified Edition (EDE)Not that we have dominion over your faith, but are fellow workers for your joy; for by faith you stand.

οὐχ ὅτι κυριεύομεν ὑμῶν τῆς πίστεως, ἀλλὰ συνεργοί ἐσμεν τῆς χαρᾶς ὑμῶν, τῇ γὰρ πίστει ἑστήκατε.
